This Innovative and Affordable Titanium Tool Watch Is an EDC Dream for Under $50

It’s difficult to innovate in the watch space, given that the industry — including many existing brands — has been around for literal centuries.

And yet, brands continually find a way to surprise us with their creativity and ingenuity — including companies you’d never expect.

The latest brand to unexpectedly wow me is a five-year-old microbrand out of India, Delhi Watch Company, which just launched one of the most innovative and distinct tool watches I’ve seen in years. And the best part? It costs less than 50 bucks.

A Carabiner for your wrist

The DWC Terra is literally a tool watch like no other, as it introduces an industry first with its unique case design.

The watch’s Grade 2 titanium case was inspired by that EDC mainstay, the carabiner, as it replaces traditional lugs with slanted grooves on the north and south ends of the case that allow you to easily slide in (or out) a pass-through strap or one with a looped end.

The unique setup allows for easy, tool-free strap changes while also offering some versatility: I see no reason why you couldn’t also attach this watch to a lanyard or possibly even a key ring, because in addition to the angled slots, there are also smaller cutouts in the case at 1:00 and 7:00.

The unique design is made even more EDC-friendly by its seriously compact dimensions: The watch measures just 32mm across, 44mm long and 7mm thick (without the crystal). A couple of compromises had to be made to keep the case — which DWC machined in-house — so thin.

Namely, the water resistance is only 30m, and the movement is a Miyota quartz rather than an automatic. For what it’s worth, I think quartz’s grab-and-go nature is actually the perfect match for the watch’s EDC vibes, though I would obviously prefer greater WR for an outdoor-themed tool watch.

The dial is highly legible and takes obvious inspiration from field watches with its inner 24-hour scale, but it features a few twists. The minute track is an unbroken ring, more akin to what you’d find on a mid-century dive watch, and the hour numerals are all displayed as double digits, with a “0” added before hours 1 – 9 for greater symmetry.

The dial is matte black, a nice aesthetic match to the blasted finish of the case, and the syringe hands are coated with titanium. All dial markings, including the minute track, are printed in “vintage Japanese lume,” which also fills the hour and minute hands.

This is the first time I’ve heard of “vintage Japanese lume,” and I’m not entirely sure what it means. I assume DWC didn’t go digging up some decades-old radioactive tritium from Japan to put on their dial, so this likely refers to a vintage-look lume formula from a Japanese manufacturer, similar to the “Old Radium” color offered by Switzerland’s Super-LumiNova.

Another unique and puzzling feature of the watch is the double-boxed crystal. It’s made of Schott glass rather than sapphire or mineral glass, and DWC says it’s the only watch to use this type of crystal. Schott is a German producer of specialty glass, and they make various types with differing tolerances to scratches and cracks. It’s unclear which form of Schott glass DWC is using, but the brand says it was chosen for its clarity and durability.

The caseback is in stainless steel for greater durability, as is the crown, though that has been coated with titanium to match the look of the case. The strap included with the watch isn’t actually a pass-through design, but rather a black nylon parachute strap with stitched, looped ends. It secures with a hook-and-loop buckle in either steel or titanium — the brand doesn’t say which.

Pricing and availability

It’s not often you see such a young, inexpensive brand exercise so much creativity and innovation in a watch. From the carabiner-like case to the Schott glass crystal to the unique field watch-inspired dial with its “vintage Japanese lume,” the DWC Terra takes a lot of risks. Whether they all pay off in the metal, I can’t say, but the watch is so unbelievably affordable that it’s absolutely worth taking a chance to see for yourself.

The DWC Terra is priced at Rs. 3,999 in Indian rupees, which currently converts to a paltry $44. That makes it one of the cheapest titanium watches on the market, and easily the most innovative for the money.

The watch is limited to 5,555 examples — a nod to the brand’s fifth anniversary — and the first batch of 1,700 sold out within minutes when it went live at the end of December. The remaining 3,855 examples will go on sale on DWC’s website in April, so mark your calendars now.
