G-Shock’s New Holy Grail Radically Transforms an Iconic Watch

Less than a dozen people in the world will be lucky enough to nab this Cobarion-bezeled 6900 based off the ’90s icon.

G-Shock is no stranger to the rumor mill.

Who could forget the whispers around the MRG-B5000, the first ever MR-G model based on the legendary 1983 original? Or last year’s Ring Watch, widely believed to be fake until it actually came out?

Now the mill is churning yet again, this time with a G-Shock so obscure, you might never see one in person.

Not your average metal

Hypebeast Japan shared a video of the upcoming GM-6900CCC-3, which the outlet claims will be limited to less than a dozen examples worldwide.

Similar to the popular but now-discontinued GM6900G-9, the 6900CCC (nickname pending) is gold in color. But rather than stainless steel, the bezel is made of an alloy called Cobarion.

Used on certain MR-G models in the past, Cobarion was developed at Iwate University in Japan by Professor Akihiko Chiba and is made up of cobalt, chrome and molybdenum.

Prior to making its watchmaking debut with the G-Shock MRG-G2000CB “Kurozonae” in 2017, the material was applied in the medical field for artificial joints, thanks to its extreme hardness.

Twice the hardness of stainless steel and four times that of titanium (albeit heavier), Cobarion has been compared to platinum in terms of its luxurious luster, which you can see here on the 6900CCC’s faceted bezel.

In true G-Shock fashion, there is no official information yet, so sizing is still unclear. However, a GM-6900 almost always spans 49.7mm across and 53.9mm lug-to-lug with 200m of water resistance.

It also appears the watch has the standard resin inner case as well, but the caseback is gold-colored, featuring a monochromatic camouflage pattern shared with the dial.

Likewise, the resin strap will have a camouflage print, but in a darker woodland pattern with greens and grays.

A stylish staple

While you could pick any model from the Casio sub-brand as a streetwear favorite, the 6900 range is the paragon.

The classic 6900 model has been a streetwear staple since the mid-’90s.

Since it debuted in the mid-’90s, the rounded digital timepiece has been popular with urban culture simply for how it combines boldness and subtlety.

Lending itself well to collaborations due to its deceptive simplicity, the 6900 was the canvas for G-Shock’s earliest collaborations, such as one with Stüssy in the late ‘90s and Bathing Ape a few years later.

In other words, it’s the perfect candidate for a variant that only a few people in the world will be able to wear.

Availability and pricing

G-Shock has yet to officially reveal the GM-6900CCC-3.

According to Hypebeast Japan, G-Shock will be select 10 “key individuals” who will receive this watch, although the process remains ambiguous.
