One of the Most Rugged and Iconic Japanese Watches Gets a Signature British Heritage Redux

Of their three collaborations so far, this team-up between G-Shock and the mavens at Bamford might just be the very best.

G-Shock’s 5600 is unequivocally its most iconic and significant watch, bar none. It’s also one of the brand’s most widely reissued watches, and is still frequently adorned with novel colorways to this day.

Unfortunately, that can often make it difficult for new releases to stand out. There are just so many existing options already out there, and many vary only slightly from one another.

Thankfully, that’s not the case with the G-Shock x Bamford GM-5600BWD-1 you see here today. Thanks to the British watch customizers, this is one of the most striking models to come out in recent memory. And it could be an instant classic, as a result.

Third time’s a charm

There’s a lot to love about this take on the G-Shock 5600. That’s especially true for stalwart fans of the brand, as this take doesn’t diverge from the base watch too much. And yet, it still manages to stand apart in some major ways.

The biggest stylistic divergence is, perhaps obviously, the colorway. The base watch is black, which itself is fairly common in the world of G-Shock. But it’s the smaller details — the bezel lettering, dial outlines and smaller markings — that help set this version apart.

Rather than reimagining the icon, Bamford has instead chosen to highlight it, utilizing its signature color: aqua blue. That vibrant color, offset by the base watch’s darkness, grants this 5600 a unique pop of flair.

And it’s not just the dial; the blue colorway extends to the admittedly much bolder Bamford-branded strap. (Don’t fret, if you dislike the strap. It’s exceptionally easy to remove and replace, courtesy of its quick-release mechanisms.)

British blues

There’s one other significant detail about this watch that, unless you’re a die-hard digital watch fan, you might not notice. However, this essential detail helps really bring the whole vibe together.

The display on this 5600 is negative, meaning the display’s background is black, and the numerical digits and other markings are light gray. This is an inversion of typical digital displays and makes the blue on the dial all the more prominent.

Beyond those styling details, the rest of the watch is pretty par for the G-Shock course, which is to say it’s incredibly tough and capable. It has a steel and resin case, the brand’s signature shock-resistant housing, a reliable quartz movement, a bio-resin band and an exclusive engraved caseback.

It’s also, as is typical, loaded to the gills with onboard features. They include a stopwatch, timer, multifunctional alarm, full auto calendar and so on.

It is not recommended that you throw this G-Shock through a glass window (although it could probably survive it).
