One of Grand Seiko’s Best Styles Just Got More Versatile

White Birch fans, this one’s for you.

One of the many things about Grand Seiko watches that sets them apart from other brands is their nature-inspired dials. Fans of the brand refer to models based on their dials — Snowflake, Mt. Iwate, etc. — and every Grand Seiko stan has their favorite.

One of the most popular is the White Birch. Debuting as the SLGH005 back in 2021, the White Birch quickly became one of Grand Seiko’s flagship models, drawing comparisons to the Snowflake for its textured, silver, wintry dial inspired by the birch tree forests outside the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi in Japan’s Hiraniwa Plateau in Iwate Prefecture.

Today, Grand Seiko adds a new birch dial to its lineup with the “Moonlit Birch,” and its dark-blue color and more compact case in stainless steel arguably make it even more versatile than the original.

Night mode

The dial of the Moonlit Birch, ref. SLGW007, is inspired by the “bark of a white birch tree illuminated by the moon.” The birch bark pattern here is horizontal rather than vertical on the original White Birch, which makes the watch a bit more subdued in my opinion. We previously saw this style of birch bark pattern last year on the white-dialed SLGW003.

The watch maintains the Evolution 9 case and dial style of the White Birch, Grand Seiko’s newest design language, which is rooted in bolder, more contemporary aesthetics. However, it updates the case significantly. For one, the case is now in stainless steel rather than titanium, giving the watch more heft, more sheen and a more traditional look.

The case is also more compact than what you’ll find on the original White Birch. It clocks in at 38.6mm across instead of 40mm, 45mm lug-to-lug instead of 47mm and measures just 9.95mm thick, down from 11.7mm. All of these stats add up to a watch that’s considerably more wearable than the White Birch, which, to be fair, was already pretty wearable.

A new movement is partly to thank for the smaller dimensions, as the Moonlit Birch swaps out the White Birch’s automatic Calibre 9SA5 for the manually wound Cal. 9SA4. It boasts a high beat rate of 36,000 vibrations per hour and an impressive power reserve of 80 hours when fully wound.

Lastly, the Moonlit Birch eschews the bracelet of the White Birch for a calf leather strap that’s color-matched to the dial for more visual cohesion.

Pricing and availability

With its more traditional dial color and case material, combined with its smaller size, the Moonlit Birch is arguably a more versatile wear than the sportier, more headturning White Birch. I’d probably choose the White Birch if given the choice between the two, but I like watches that look unique and unusual. For those who dig the mainstream, the Moonlit Birch is the way to go.

The Moonlit Birch is priced $200 higher than the White Birch, with an SRP of $10,000. I find this surprising given that the White Birch has a more expensive case material and a bracelet, so I’m guessing the added cost of the Moonlit Birch must come from the manually wound movement. Or, it could just be that seemingly everything is more expensive these days — especially watches.
