Hanhart is the definition of a serious tool watch brand, specializing in pilot’s watches and chronographs. While the German company’s first serious diver didn’t hit the market until 2024, it stands toe-to-toe with some of the biggest names in the game.
The Aquasphere brings Hanahrt’s robust capability and modest styling into the water with a 42mm stainless steel case featuring 300m water resistance, an automatic helium escape valve and a ceramic bezel insert. And, for the first time since its introduction, it is available with a black dial.
Certified classics like the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, Rolex Submariner and Seiko 62MAS established the combination of a black dial and a black bezel as the standard for dive watches. I suspect Hanhart was avoiding the risk of blending in with that standard by debuting the Aquasphere with a royal blue dial and bezel.
A year later, a second reference with a black ceramic bezel was added to the collection, but the blue dial remained. Now, after two years of being established, the Aquasphere is available in classic black-on-black.
I understand why Hanhart waited so long to place a matte black dial on the Aquasphere, when most brands would have dropped it out of the gate. It demonstrates the type of patience and wisdom you would expect from a serious watch brand that took 142 years to release a dive watch.
