Luminox’s Latest Launch Imbues an Affordable Ultralight Tool Watch with Diver Durability

Luminox is famous for two things: its exceptionally long-lasting 25-year Luminox Light Technology (LLT) and its outstandingly rugged tactical timepieces. In fact, the bulk of its catalog combines both of those elements.

The brand’s latest does, as well, but the Luminox Leatherback Sand Turtle Giant XS.0326 is also unusual, even for this pioneering brand, in several ways.

Turf, not surf

You’d be forgiven for thinking this watch is a diver. It does, after all, look like a dive watch. It has a rotating dive timer bezel. Even its namesake, the leatherback turtle, is a sea creature.

However, it is actually a field watch (or, as the brand calls it, an “outdoor watch”). So, what’s the deal? Well, it was definitely, purposefully inspired by dive watches, in more ways than one.

Per the brand, this watch “translates ocean-born durability into a lightweight tool watch built for rugged terrain.” That is to say, this watch can take a serious beating.

Just … maybe don’t take it too far underwater, as it is only rated for depths of 100 meters, which isn’t technically out of the acceptable range of divers (at least per Longines), but is definitely on the shallower end of the pool.

But here’s the thing: the dive watch functionality this watch uses is actually useful in the field, as well. Specifically, the bezel allows you to track elapsed time, making it easier to know how long you’ve been out on the trails, how long since your last meal and so on.

Beachy keen

The Leatherback Sea Turtle has been a part of Luminox’s lineup for some time. Even the Giant version, with a 44-millimeter case diameter, already exists. But this new version isn’t just a color swap.

Typically, Luminox watches are either made from stainless steel or the brand’s proprietary Carbonox carbon fiber-based material. But this watch’s case is actually fiberglass.

A common material in the EDC world, this composite is exceptionally durable, offers a high strength-to-weight ratio and is impervious to moisture, chemicals, extreme temperatures and more.

For reference, the entire watch weighs 50 grams, which is a little over 1.76 ounces. That’s ultralight by any measure.

It also allows the watch to adopt its signature monochromatic tan colorway, inspired by sand, as you might’ve guessed by its name (Sand Turtle). However, the other part of the name, the turtle bit, is a reference to the case shape and shielded crown.

It’s finished off with a reliable and affordable Ronda 515 quartz movement (a fan-favorite), making it plenty dependable, too. And it gets a matching PU rubber strap.
