Yes, it was worth the wait.

Although Norwegian watchmaker Micromilspec continues to look more and more like a regular watch brand with each passing day, the core of the brand’s business remains the custom watches it builds under contract for various military units around the world.

The first watch the brand ever produced after its founding in 2019 was a custom pilot’s watch for the Royal Norwegian Air Force’s Search and Rescue Squadron. But as Micromilspec has expanded its permanent collection of watches available to the public with divers, field watches and chronographs, there was one glaring omission. Despite beginning its life as a maker of pilot’s watches, Micromilspec had yet to offer one to the public.

That changes now, as Micromilspec has launched its first-ever pilot’s watch that anyone can buy. Turns out, it was worth the wait.

Purpose-built pilot’s watch

Micromilspec prioritizes function over form, relying on real-world feedback from military personnel in the field when building its watches. Despite that, the brand’s watches tend to look really, really good, and that trend continues with the new Dualtimer.

The watch has a sharp-angled integrated-style case similar to Micromilspec’s flagship Milgraph tool watch, but in this case, the case is made from stainless steel rather than titanium and the crown is mounted on the right instead of the left for easier manipulation while on the wrist.

The watch’s design seems to take inspiration from a number of classic pilot’s watches. The black dial features white text for clear legibility and the general index layout, with a triangle with two dots at 12 and Arabic numerals for the other indices, is derived from the classic Type A Flieger.

The 3:00 date window is a curved cutout showing three dates, with a triangle pointing to the current date in the middle. It is highly reminiscent of the date window IWC previously used on its Mark XVII Pilot’s Watch, but with a white triangle here instead of the IWC’s red. The large date is balanced out by having all the dial text at 9:00 instead of the more traditional 12 and 6.

Then there’s the bezel, which is a 24-hour GMT bezel with a triangle at 12 and only the even numerals displayed. This style of course originated with Rolex’s GMT-Master, which was conceived as a pilot’s watch upon its debut in the 1950s. On the Dualtimer, the bezel skips the Rolex’s original Pepsi color scheme to further its monochrome styling with white text against a black background.

Unlike the Milgraph, the Dualtimer is available on an integrated flat-link bracelet.

Powering the watch is the Sellita SW330-2 automatic, a very commonly utilized Swiss-made “office” GMT with 56 hours of power reserve, a quickset date and an independently operable GMT hand.

The watch’s crown is abutted by large, chamfered crown guards and screws down, helping to ensure a robust 200m of water resistance. Is that more than what’s needed for a pilot’s watch? Probably, but given that the 42mm case is just 12mm thick, I don’t think many will complain.

There are multiple strap options for the Dualtimer, all of which seamlessly integrate into the case. Most premium is a flat H-link stainless steel bracelet with polished chamfers and a butterfly clasp. There are also textured rubber straps in black, orange and white that appear to be the same straps available on the Milgraph. There’s allegedly a black leather strap option, but it doesn’t appear on the product page. (In general, I’ll say that Micromilspec’s website is … not great. There’s a lot of inconsistent product info on there.)

My favorite feature of the Dualtimer, and one that sets it apart from most other pilot’s GMT watches, is the lume treatment. The hands, indices and bezel markings all use ultrabright Super-LumiNova X1, but in different shades. The hands and indices of the main timekeeping glow green, while the bezel and GMT hand glow blue, making it extremely easy to distinguish between the two time zones in any light.

Pricing and Availability

While it doesn’t have quite the head-turning looks or crazy-high functionality of the Milgraph, the Dualtimer is still another attractive and purpose-built winner from Micromilspec. Plus, at around half the price of the Milgraph, it also marks an easier entry into the brand for curious collectors.

Like all of Micromilspec’s releases, the Dualtimer is an annual release and is made to order. Lead time is about six months, and the price ranges from $1,955 on a strap to $2,035 on the bracelet.
