The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 debuted in 1972 as perhaps the world’s first all-black watch, and it’s achieved iconic status in large part due to its ultracool blacked-out vibe (just as Tom Cruise’s Maverick in Top Gun and its sequel).

But as it turns out, the automotive chronograph looks pretty damn good even when stripped of its signature black coating.

Porsche Design has unveiled a new version of its flagship watch in bare titanium for just the second time, following the 1975 special edition that debuted last year. But unlike that rare, 350-piece limited edition, the new Porsche Design Chronograph 1 All Titanium Numbered Edition will be around for quite some time.

Laid bare

Although they look virtually identical from almost all angles, the new Chronograph 1 is not a rehash of last year’s 1975 Limited Edition. Instead, this is a duplicate of the current Chronograph 1 All Black Numbered Edition without the signature black titanium carbide coating.

That means it retains that model’s slightly more modern Porsche 911 dashboard-inspired dial. It’s matte black with all-white hands, markers and text, and a bright red seconds hand for the chronograph. It also keeps the modern Porsche Design logo above the 3:00 day-date window instead of the 1975’s retro logo, and it retains the All Black’s “Chronometer Certified” designation under the window.

The new watch is powered by the same movement as the All Black, the Porsche Design Calibre WERK 01.140 automatic chronograph, which remains visible behind a sapphire caseback to show off the nifty black finishing on its rotor, bridges and mainplate. The 1975, by contrast, has a closed caseback and is powered by the Calibre WERK 01.240, which boasts a flyback function that’s absent here.

Outside of the open caseback, the rest of the 40.8mm x 14.15 case and quick-release bracelet are unchanged from last year’s 1975 Edition. They remain in full titanium that’s been glass bead-blasted for a cool, matte finish. As always, the crown screws down and the watch is water resistant to an impressive 100m

Availability and pricing

As I said previously, the Porsche Design Chronograph 1 All Titanium Numbered Edition will be around for some time, as it is a permanent member of the brand’s catalog and not a limited edition like the 1975. OK, I should say it’s not a traditional limited edition. PD is limiting annual production of the watch to only 1,000 pieces per year, but it should be around for years to come.

There’s also some good news on the price front. Because Porsche Design is saving money by not using a flyback movement like in the 1975 or a titanium carbide coating like on the All Black, the Chronograph 1 All Titanium is a fair amount cheaper than those two watches, both of which are priced at $9,650. The new model, by contrast, will save you $1,400, as its SRP is just $8,250.
