At the beginning of the year, Timex revived a 1970s watch called the Nebula (renamed the Vega) — one that appeared in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction on the wrist of John Travolta’s character, Vincent Vega (hence the rename).

Now, the brand has returned to that watch with a new interpretation called the Q Timex Blue Vega. And while it is clearly stylistically different, it also has another sneaky upgrade that helps set it apart.

Got the blues

The Vega relaunch from the beginning of the year was faithful to the original watch in many ways. Most notably, it had the same red-on-black colorway as the one Travolta wears in Tarantino’s ’90s crime thriller.

This new take swaps that colorway for a blue one. However, the overall vibe and pattern remain the same. In fact, nothing else has stylistically changed beyond the color swap.

While the color is different, all the features that made the original great remain.

However, there is also an upgrade you can’t see at first glance: the electricity-like dial pattern has gotten a new lume treatment. Yes, the entire pattern glows in low light, adding even more character and depth to this watch.

Of course, the minimalist dial indices and both the hour and minute hands also still have lume of their own. And since the lume on the markers and hands is green, it offers enough contrast that you can still read the watch at a glance in low light.

Along with the normal lume on the indices, the vibrant blue also glows in low light, adding another level of intrigue.

Throwback beauty

Beyond that, the new dial colorway and treatment, the rest of the watch remains thankfully faithful to the original release. That starts with the movement under the hood.

This watch gets a Timex-classic quartz analog movement that’s reliable, durable and (perhaps most importantly) keeps the watch an affordable $229.

Above the dial, it features the same uniquely faceted acrylic crystal, housed in its classic stainless steel case. And it maintains its predecessor’s day-date window at the 3 o’clock position.

To finish it off, the watch sports a classic alligator-style strap, crafted from genuine leather, with a straightforward stainless steel clasp.

I kind of hope they keep this trend going, as I’d like to see this watch in a few more colorways before they put it on the back burner again.

Not only is the quartz movement reliable and highly accurate, but it also helps keep this stunning watch’s price down.
