Seiko’s “Turtle” is one of the most universally revered dive watches, renowned for its blend of respectable performance, welcome affordability and distinctive look.

Technically, it is a series of watches, originating in 1976 with the 6306/9 and produced under the Prospex label since 2016. Through multiple movements and minor dial adjustments, the Japanese watchmaker has maintained a consistent look and quality, which has endeared the “Turtle” to several generations of watch enthusiasts.

Now, Seiko is doing its part to help save the aquatic reptiles that represent its famous dive watch. Through an ongoing partnership with Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, an Australian organization that rescues and rehabilitates sea turtles, Seiko is sponsoring and documenting the recovery process for a turtle named Kame.

To raise awareness and funds for CTRC and Kame — which means turtle in Japanese — Seiko created the limited edition Prospex SRPM04K ‘Kame.’ It is a “Turtle” inspired by the natural beauty of Fitzroy Island, a sea turtle sanctuary located along the Great Barrier Reef.

Seiko is donating an undisclosed amount from the sale of every Prospex ‘Kame’ directly to the CTRC. Kame’s recovery process and eventual re-release will be shared on Seiko Australia’s social channels.

A Pacific paradise

The Prospex ‘Kame’ features a course dial texture that resembles an oil painting, but at arm’s length, creates the illusion of shimmering ocean water. It has a fumé color scheme transitioning from bright turquoise at the center to dark blue at the edge.

Like the renowned Prospex PADI “Turtle,” only the minute hand is colored, but instead of red, it is seafoam green. The hour hand, the seconds hand and the hour markers are unchanged and fitted with Seiko’s Lumibrite.

The dial is topped with a Hardlex crystal and framed by a dark blue ceramic dive bezel insert with a seafoam green 20-minute segment and a lumed pip. The insert is held by a gold-tone bezel frame that mimics shimmering sunlight reflecting off the ocean’s surface.

Swims like a turtle

Functionally, the Prospex ‘Kame’ is the same “Turtle” that is known and loved throughout the dive watch community. It features a steel, rounded-off, elliptical cushion case that earned it its moniker.

It has 200m water resistance, thanks to a screw-down crown and screw on caseback. While the CTRC isn’t mentioned anywhere on the case, each caseback is numbered in the 1,000-piece limited edition run.

The Prospex ‘Kame’ comes on a brushed steel three-link bracelet with polished inner edges on the side links. An additional dark blue two-piece rubber dive strap with a steel pin buckle is included with the watch.

This capable diver is powered by the Seiko caliber 4R36, a well-respected workhorse movement that beats at 3Hz and has a 41-hour power reserve. It is automatic, but can also be hand-wound with the crown in its base position.

Seiko has released dozens of “Turtle” variations since reviving it under the Prospex collection, but the ‘Kame’ is among the most beautiful. It captures the colors and tones of a pristine island paradise.
