Long before the term “influencer” was invented to sell products, Steve McQueen was known as the King of Cool. His influence was such that it unintentionally turned a commercial flop into an icon.

Legend has it that when McQueen was training for his 1971 film Le Mans, he modeled himself after professional racer Jo Siffert, who wore a white jumpsuit with Heuer sponsorship patches. The same watchmaker was coincidentally asked to provide watches and timers for the film because of its role in the racing industry.

Heuer scrambled to get watches to set before filming began, and the Monaco was chosen for McQueen’s character because it was one of the only watches available in triplicate. The film flopped commercially but became a cult hit, and the peculiar square tool watch achieved immortality.

More specifically, McQueen rocked the reference 1133B in Le Mans, and the square dial has wooed generations with its soothing grey-blue color, accented with red and white, and its geometrically pleasing layout.

Despite the multiple iterations that preceded the Monaco line’s 1978 axing and followed its 1997 revival, the 1133B has remained the ideal expression. A near-exact replica was released in 2009 for the watch’s 40th anniversary, and now the dial receives new life in the redesigned Monaco Chronograph collection.

TAG Heuer updated the 39mm case with Grade 5 titanium, sharper angles and edges, and a small, flat-topped bezel with rounded corners. The lugs are still angled, the crown is still at 9:00 and the bumper-style pushers are still splayed to the corners.

The new Monaco Chronograph debuts in three color schemes. Joining the “McQueen” is a stunning emerald green with sunburst brushing, black subdials and uniform metallic hands and indices, alongside a rose gold and black scheme borrowed from a 2025 Monaco Split-Seconds.

Sharpen up

The new Monaco Chronograph case takes on a sharp, geometric tone reminiscent of integrated steel sports watches. But the effect is a natural fit for the 57-year-old design, more an exaggeration than an adoption.

The 39mm case is finished with a uniform vertical brushing, emphasizing its utilitarian nature. It measures 13mm tall, is topped with a domed sapphire crystal and boasts 100m of water resistance.

All three colors come on a black perforated leather racing strap with a titanium pin buckle.

This one goes to 11

A fact that has been buried under McQueen’s legend is that the 1133B was powered by the Caliber 11, one of the first automatic chronograph movements ever produced, developed in unison by Heuer, Breitling and Hamilton in 1969.

The new Monaco Chronograph carries on this tradition as the first generation powered by TAG Heuer’s new in-house TH20 chronograph movement family. Dubbed the Caliber TH20-11 in homage to its ancestry, it beats at 4Hz and offers an impressive 80-hour power reserve.

The modestly decorated movement is visible through a sapphire window in the square titanium caseback, which is secured by four flat-head screws.

Availability and pricing

At this point, I’m willing to wager that more people know and love the TAG Heuer Monaco than have even seen Le Mans, and that’s ok. It was ahead of its time, and chances are it would have been lost to history without the film.

TAG Heuer’s new Monaco Chronograph freshens up the design with respectful restraint. It will be available in April 2026 for $9,350 in all titanium and $13,050 with rose gold accents.
