Timex is the king of approachable watches, and its Expedition series is among the best affordable field watches ever made. Hell, even without the affordability angle, it’s still an iconic line.

The latest take, the Timex Expedition Field Post Solar, adds some especially convenient tech that elevates this classic watch without sacrificing its style or bumping it out of its budget-friendly range.

Black Timex Expedition wristwatch with a black nylon strap, white numerals, and a date display at the 3 o'clock position. The watch face also features 24-hour military time markings and the text "SOLAR POWERED." The strap has a small white leaf logo near the end. The watch is placed on a wooden surface next to a brown leather item and a partially visible map.
The solar-powered quartz movement makes this one of the brand’s most convenient, reliable field watches ever.

Timely outdoor companion

The Timex Expedition Field Post Solar is positioned squarely in the center of the Expedition lineup’s price range. While it’s not quite as affordable as the ultra-budget options (some of which fall under $70), it’s far cheaper than the high-end automatic versions (just a hair under $400).

Its array of features also sits between the budget and high-end offerings, making it the perfect middle ground for anyone who wants more refinement but not quite as much out of pocket as the most expensive ones.

Black Timex Expedition watch face with white hour and minute hands, a second hand, and a date window showing the 14th. The watch features both 12-hour and 24-hour markings, with "TIMEX EXPEDITION" and "SOLAR POWERED" text on the dial. The case is gray with a textured crown on the right side.
The dual hour markers mean this watch can easily be read in standard 12- or 24-hour military time.

The watch’s styling is spot on, boasting a simple, minimalist stainless steel case that aligns with traditional field watches (Timex’s included). The dial is also relatively minimalist in its styling, opting for simple hour and minute markings alongside big, bold numerals.

Unlike some Expedition watches, this watch has a secondary 24-hour time scale, meaning you can read it in standard 12-hour time or military time, whichever is your preference. It also has a date window for a little additional functionality.

Black woven nylon watch strap with multiple adjustment holes and a matte gray metal buckle engraved with "TIMEX." The strap is attached to a dark gray watch case with a textured edge visible on the back.
Like its historical counterparts, this watch comes with a classic, easy-wearing fabric strap.

Sun dial

What sets this watch apart is its power source. Unlike its pricier siblings, this is not an automatic. It’s also not a straightforward quartz like its ultra-budget relatives.

Instead, it’s right in the middle. This watch has a reliable and affordable quartz movement that offers convenience comparable to that of automatics. This is because it’s solar-powered.

The watch features a date window at the 3 o'clock position, white hour and minute hands, and a blue fabric strap with black hardware. The dial also includes 24-hour military time markings and the text "TIMEX EXPEDITION" and "SOLAR POWERED.
The watch is available in three dial colors — black, blue and green — and the included strap matches the dial.

That means this watch will charge whenever you have access to overhead lighting, including the sun, making it the perfect outdoor companion. The cells are hidden on the dial, which comes in black, green or blue.

That dial also matches the fabric strap, another classic element found on other field watches. The case and hardware of the black edition are also black, while those of the other two are gunmetal gray.

The 41-millimeter timepiece also has a sapphire crystal, and it’s water resistant to 100 meters.

The watch face features white Arabic numerals for both 12-hour and 24-hour time, luminous hands, a date window at the 3 o'clock position, and the text "SOLAR POWERED" below the center. At 41 millimeters in diameter, the watch face is easy to read at a glance, a helpful feature on the trails.
