The Timex Black Max has always been one of those watches that commands attention from affordable vintage watch enthusiasts.

Originally launched in 1978, this motorsports-inspired timepiece became a cult classic before disappearing from the market for nearly five decades.

Thanks to a collaboration between Timex and Huckberry late in 2025, the Black Max returned—and better yet, is now available at a significant discount at Huckberry as part of the retailer’s annual winter sale, which makes it even more compelling.

The original Black Max was ahead of its time. Released as one of the earliest fully blacked-out watches, it drew clear inspiration from the iconic Porsche Design Chronograph 1, featuring a distinctive helmet-shaped case with black coating on both the case and bracelet.

The dial design was unmistakable, highlighted by a dramatic sloped inner bezel with a silver tachymeter scale that, admittedly, looks cool even if it isn’t particularly practical. Five-minute markings instead of traditional hour indices and a burnt orange seconds hand rounded out the watch’s racing DNA.

The 2025 Huckberry x Timex collaboration brings the Black Max into the modern era with several key improvements. The case has been upgraded from base metal to stainless steel and sized up from 38mm to 41mm, making it more suitable for contemporary tastes.

The three-row plastic Oyster-style bracelet has been replaced with a premium-looking stainless steel H-link design that feels substantially more refined.

Water resistance has been bumped to 100 meters, and the dial is now protected by a mineral crystal. The signature concave tachymeter scale remains, preserving that distinctive bowl-like appearance that made the original so captivating. And yes, that pop of orange on the seconds hand is still there, adding a vibrant accent to the otherwise murdered-out aesthetic.

One notable change is the movement. While the original featured an automatic caliber, this reissue runs on quartz. It’s a cost-saving measure that some purists might lament, but it keeps the price accessible and ensures hassle-free accuracy.

Originally priced at $249, the Huckberry x Timex 1979 Black Max is currently on sale for just $149. That’s a 40% discount on an already affordable watch that successfully resurrects a legendary design. At this price point, it’s hard to find another blacked-out sports watch with this much character and heritage.

Whether you’re a fan of vintage Timex designs or simply looking for an affordable watch with serious attitude, the Black Max delivers. The combination of improved materials, classic styling, and the current discount makes this one worth considering before stock runs out.
