This Sporty Automatic Chronograph Is a Treat for Retro Racing Fans

Union Glashütte’s Belisar Chronograph Speedster epitomizes sporty tool watches.

The stout 44mm wide by 15mm tall case allows for optimal legibility, while the oversized crown and pushers enhance functionality. It is an analog timer meant for racing purists who intend to use it.

For the past few years, the German watchmaker has released a limited-edition version of the Belisar Chronograph Speedster with a vibrant paint job that leans into the retro auto racing theme.

Past incarnations have included classic auto body details like vertical racing stripes and faux-stenciled block numbers. The 2025 Limited Edition moves inside the car with a dial inspired by a dashboard instrument panel.

More specifically, the vibrant dial copies a particular dashboard from a car familiar to European rally racing fans: the 1980s Lancia Delta Integrale.

Off to the races

The Belisar Chronograph Speedster Limited Edition 2025 has a standard tri-compax dial layout, colored for maximum functionality behind the steering wheel.

The center of the dial is decorated with a neon yellow crosshair, framed by a railroad seconds track in the same color. Instead of an hour track, a 60-minute track is marked with a numeral every five minutes.

In an interesting detail, the matte-black chronograph seconds hand is tipped with neon yellow to align with the crosshair circle. The black snailed 30-minute totalizer and 12-hour totalizer, placed at three o’clock and six o’clock, respectively, are coordinated with neon yellow hands.

A small seconds display at nine o’clock is differentiated by a flat white dial featuring a 60-second railroad track. A white tachymeter scale is placed on a black ring around the dial’s edge.

A date window is cleverly hidden away within the 12-hour totalizer. The black wheel with white numerals blends discreetly into the sub-dial.

The date is adjusted independently with a corrector on the side of the case at 10 o’clock. The crown only controls the time.

Strap in

This special-edition reference sticks to the Belisar Chronograph Speedster’s standard case, which has smooth lines and a blend of polished and brushed surfaces.

A brushed top breaks up the polished bezel and tiered sides. The Belisar has distinctive exposed screws on the lugs. A signed crown is flanked by pushers marked with a power symbol at two o’clock and a reset symbol at four o’clock.

Universal Glashütte provides a pair of straps with the watch. It comes on a textured rubber pin-buckle strap with fitted ends that matches the gray-blue of the dial, and is accompanied by a black calfskin leather strap with yellow stitching and a yellow lining.

This imposing tool watch is powered by an in-house caliber UNG-27.S1 automatic movement, which has a 65-hour power reserve and a silicone balance spring. It is based on the trusted Valjoux Caliber 7750 chronograph movement.

The Union Glashütte Balisar Chronograph Speedster Limited Edition 2025 is available now from Union Glashütte for €3,300 (~$3,847).

The brand’s annual uber-sporty take on its auto racing chronograph is a limited edition run of 388 pieces this year.
