A Beloved Swiss Brand Just Launched Its Most Convenient, User-Friendly Watch to Date

Best known for its multi-tools, Victorinox has a healthy ecosystem of timepieces, as well. But this new addition marks a major first.

Chances are that, if you know the name Victorinox, you probably associate it with Swiss Army Knives. And that makes sense, as it’s the only brand (along with its sub-brands) legally authorized to make SAKs.

But Victorinox has a much vaster catalog than just EDC and adventure-ready multi-tools. It also offers an array of award-winning travel bags (and other gear) and watches. You might actually know about the brand’s I.N.O.X. watch, which famously could survive being run over by a tank.

Despite having offered timepieces since 1989, this year marks a first for the brand with the launch of the Victorinox Concept One. And that’s because this watch employs a convenient, user-friendly movement the brand has never used before.

Soak up the sun

For the first time ever, Victorinox has introduced a solar-powered movement in its upcoming Concept One. But this isn’t just any solar-powered movement; it’s a Swiss-made Ronda 215.

As Ronda is one of the most ubiquitous and trusted names in Swiss watchmaking, you can count on this movement being reliable and accurate. It’s also exceptionally easy to maintain. All you need is a light source, and the watch will keep right on ticking.

The minimalist dial doubles as a solar panel, allowing the watch to stay juiced up for up to eight months straight.

This particular movement also has a power reserve of eight months. That means it will keep ticking even in complete darkness for the better part of a year. And since it has an eight-year battery life, you don’t have to worry about swapping it out for nearly a decade either.

Along with its user-friendly solar power, the movement is also protected by an anti-magnetic housing, helping to keep its accuracy unimpeded by magnets, magnetic fields and so on. The watch also has a date window at the 6 o’clock position for a bit more functionality.

The launch also includes a more traditional automatic option.

The Swiss never miss

While the solar movement is the big brand-first for this release, it’s not the only one included in the Concept One launch. For those who prefer a more traditional approach, there are also versions of the watch with an automatic movement — specifically a La Joux-Perret G100 automatic with a 68-hour power reserve.

There are also some stylistic detail differences between the two movements. The solar-powered version has a sunken, flat dial, while the automatic has a raised center disc with a vertical brushed finish.

The dial and case are both highly minimal, but not without their unique quirks, especially on the automatic version (above).

However, both watches have the same lumed minimalist indices and hands, as well as a brushed stainless steel case with an almost amoeba-like polished hexagonal bezel detail. Both watches are also 39mm in diameter and water-resistant to 100 meters.

The watch, with either movement, can also be had with your choice of a link bracelet or rubber strap, so long as you want the dial in black. If you prefer blue, green or gray, the watch comes standard with a rubber strap.

The watch is available in eight different versions across two movements and four colorways.
