The Zenith A384 is one of the brand’s most beloved and recognized classic chronograph models, as it was one of the three original chronograph models to house the brand’s groundbreaking El Primero movement in 1969 alongside the A385 and A386.

Of the three, the A384 is arguably the most recognizable thanks to its angular tonneau-shaped case and distinct “ladder” bracelet designed by the legendary Gay Frères.

That’s probably why Zenith has already launched several A384 Revival watches in recent years, but its latest may be its best yet.

Tropical vacation

The latest addition to Zenith’s lineup of A384 Revivals is the “Tropical.” In watch-nerd parlance, “tropical” refers not to a climate, but to the warm brown tones black watch dials take on after decades of exposure to sunlight. It’s a highly sought-after feature on account of its beauty, with “tropical” vintage examples of the A384 selling for upwards of $50,000 in recent years.

What Zenith has done is create an artificially tropical dial for its new A384 Revival, and while some enthusiasts detest faux-aged watch dials, it’s pretty hard to argue with the results of this one.

The Tropical is meant to look like an aged version of the standard A384 Panda.

The dial is white lacquered, adding an elevated touch of modern luxury, with the three subdials and inner tachymeter scale all executed in a warm brown tone that perfectly replicates the look of 50-year-old “tropical” black dial elements.

Old Radium Super-LumiNova lume is used to fill the hands and applied indices, which provides the perfect aesthetic match to the tropical color. Using white lume here would be too jarring, I think. The watch keeps its bright red chrono seconds hand, which puts the watch’s trademark complication front-and-center. The date window also remains at 4:30, a signature quirk of the El Primero movement.

Speaking of the movement, the watch is powered by the El Primero 400. Of Zenith’s modern El Primero movements, it’s the closest to the 1969 original, and it’s the same engine you’ll find in other A384 Revivals. It’s also visible behind a sapphire caseback, which, of course, is a feature not found on the vintage originals.

The classic A384 tonneau-shaped case remains in its original, compact size of 37mm with its distinct mix of brushed and polished finishes and pump-style pushers. It’s paired with a stainless steel ladder bracelet based on the Gay Frères original, making this watch about as faithful to the original design as you can get while still using modern materials and watchmaking know-how.

Availability and pricing

I’ve seen a lot of brands try to create artificial dials, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one that looks as good as this. The lacquer elevates the dial, and the brown shade chosen by Zenith is just pitch-perfect. Put this next to a clean tropical vintage example, and I think you might even have trouble telling them apart.

However, you’re not going to have to pay $50,000 to get the Chronomaster Revival A384 Tropical. That’s not to say this is a cheap watch by any stretch, but its $10,000 price tag is a much easier pill to swallow than the prices for aesthetically equivalent vintage examples. Plus, this one will be a lot easier to live with thanks to sapphire crystals, a modern movement and 50m of water resistance.
