Zenith’s Sleek Sixties Sports Watch Is Vintage Revival Done Right

When it was introduced in 1969, Zenith’s Defy collection was remarkably ahead of its time.

The faceted octagonal case, featuring a mixture of polished and brushed surfaces and topped with a 14-sided bezel, predates Genta’s genre-defining Royal Oak by a year. And the striped rectangular hour markers exuded the kind of funk that would take over watch design in the 1970s.

Zenith’s Defy Revival, introduced in 2022, meticulously reproduced one of the 1969 designs using original blueprints. It was followed up in 2024 by a reproduction of the 1969 Defy Plongeur, a companion dive watch that debuted at the same time. Now, the comeback is complete with the recreation of the other dial that launched the Defy collection half a century ago.

If the existing Defy Revival dial was progressive for 1969, the new Defy Revival A3643 dial looked back to the design language of the 1960s when it was created. The fumé dial, ruler seconds track and funky indices are replaced with a sleek silver sunburst texture, a simple dash track and understated tiered hour markers.

Where the previous references in the Defy Revival collection are colorful and sporty, the newest addition is monotone and understated. The only pop of color on the otherwise metallic and black dial comes from an orange rectangle set into the seconds hand.

Its always sunny

Zenith faithfully reproduced the radiant silvery sunburst dial and uniquely shaped indices by 3D laser scanning a surviving vintage Defy A3643 from 1969. The radial brushing on the dial is faint but effective, producing a symmetrical sunburst glow emanating from the dial’s center.

The applied trapezoidal hour markers are more complex than they appear at arm’s length. The rhodium-plated center section features a satin-brushed finish aligned with the dial’s texture, flanked by lower sections coated in glossy black lacquer.

White rectangular markers aligned with the indices on the dash-minutes track are coated with green-glowing Super-LumiNova that matches the inlays on the rhodium-plated hands. Notably, the orange seconds hand inlay has the same green glow.

In this case

Outside of the dial, the Defy Revival A3643 uses the same 37mm stainless steel case as its predecessors. The faceted octagonal shape, with a blend of brushed concave surfaces and flat polished surfaces, defines the modern Defy collection.

The case is topped with a 14-sided polished steel bezel securing a flat sapphire crystal, and the screw-down crown is signed with Zenith’s star logo. Despite not technically being a dive watch, the Defy Revival boasts 300m water resistance.

While it looks like an integrated bracelet design, the 18mm-wide lugs are simply covered. The vintage look is complete with the same ladder-style steel bracelet that Zenith offered in 1969.

Inside the case ticks the Zenith Elite 670 automatic movement, with a 4Hz beat rate and a 50-hour power reserve. It is visible through a sapphire crystal exhibition caseback.

It’s easy to see why Zenith waited to reproduce this member of the original Defy collection last. It is the least original design in the group, but its relatively understated look has broader appeal to a modern audience than its funky companions.
