The TAG Heuer Monaco is one of the most recognizable chronographs ever made, and it will forever be tied to motorsports thanks to its cameo on the wrist of Steve McQueen in the late actor’s 1971 film Le Mans.

But what if the Monaco weren’t a chronograph at all? Would it still exude the same kind of pit-lane energy that’s made it such a beloved icon?

Welcome to Reference Points: A series about the products that changed the standard — and never really stopped influencing it. Discover more here.

The new Monaco Speed 12 answers this question with a resounding “yes.” The latest sports watch from TAG Heuer isn’t a chronograph, but it manages to put out more automotive vibes than ever, thanks to the clever transformation of a jump-hour complication into something resembling a V12 engine.

No replacement for displacement

For this innovative new Monaco, TAG Heuer teamed up with fellow LVMH entity La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, the Geneva-based haute horological manufacture that has transformed Louis Vuitton into a serious player in the advanced luxury watchmaking space.

La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton modified its Spin Time automatic movement, previously used in a few LV models, to work within a Monaco. The movement is a unique take on a jump hour, where instead of utilizing a rotating disc that “jumps” at the top of every hour, there are instead 12 individually rotating indices encircling the dial. At the top of each hour, the previous hour’s index turns over as the next hour simultaneously turns to face forward, with the current hour being the only one visible at any given time.

On the Louis Vuitton Tambour Taiko Spin Time, these rotating indices are cubes, but on the new Monaco Speed 12, they’ve been refashioned to resemble a car engine’s pistons. Each rhodium-plated “piston” in the Caliber TH84-00 is finished with a mix of sandblasting and satin brushing and features black lacquered Arabic numerals. And since there are 12 of them, the watch serves as a sort of wristworn version of a powerful V12.

Each piston is attached at the base to a small central dial, but is otherwise floating in space, creating a visually transparent display that’s quite striking. That central dial is largely openworked, but it does feature vertical grooves down its center, giving it the appearance of an engine cover.

The watch’s lone hand, the minute hand, looks like the needle on a tachymeter gauge with its tapered silhouette and red tip. Sapphire crystals cap the 40mm square case on the front and back, while an additional sapphire bezel offers an even greater view into the fascinating mechanics within. Like other “Avant-Garde Horlogerie” versions of the Monaco, the case is made of lightweight Grade 5 titanium rather than steel.

Availability and pricing

It takes a lot of guts to mess with an icon (though TAG Heuer is more freewheeling when it comes to this than most brands), especially when you’re creating such a departure both visually and functionally from the original. But thanks to the heavy automotive theming and the sheer novelty of the complication, I think the Monaco Speed 12 works as the perfect addition to the icon’s lineup. I mean, this thing is just cool as hell.

It’s also rare as hell, as TAG Heuer is making just 50 examples of the watch. It’s also, most likely, expensive as hell. The price is only available upon request, so get those requests in now if you’ve got deep pockets and want a Steve McQueen-approved V12 on your wrist.
