Technics released the SL-40CBT this past fall. It’s a direct-drive turntable with a switchable phono preamplifier, so it’s extremely easy to set up: just connect it directly to a powered speaker setup or a traditional amplifier-based hi-fi system. It also has built-in Bluetooth, thus allowing you to stream vinyl to wireless speakers and headphones.

And at $899, it’s one of Technics most entry-level turntables. (Its current flagship model, the SL100R, goes for $25,000.) At launch, the iconic Japanese audio maker claimed the SL-40CBT was “aimed at both newcomers and those upgrading from entry setups.”

Fast forward half a year, and Technics has collaborated with Fritz Hansen, the renowned Danish furniture and design brand, to create a special-edition version of its SL-40CBT.

Signature deep burgundy

Since its launch, Technics has offered the SL-40CBT in three modern finishes: light grey, charcoal or terracotta. (Note: These are the same three color options that Technics offers its active speakers, SC-CX700, in case you wanted to pair the two and create a matching system.)

Now, thanks to the collaboration, Technics is introducing the turntable in Fritz Hansen’s signature deep burgundy finish.

In addition to the new finish, the special edition SL-40CBT features two exclusive details: a Fritz Hansen-branded metal plaque attached to the plinth and a Fritz Hansen-branded platter mat.

Other than that, the SL-40CBT direct-drive turntable promises to work and sound just like the standard models.

As part of the collaboration, Fritz Hansen has also introduced a limited-edition version of the Kaiser Idell Luxus lamp, available in the same deep burgundy finish. While they’re not sold as a pair, the turntable and lamp are designed to match and sit next to each other.

According to the brands, the collaboration “considers how light and sound define the character of a space, where light defines mood, sound evokes emotion, and minimalist design connects both.”

Availability and pricing

The Technics SL-40CBT (Fritz Hansen Special Edition) will be available starting in October 2026. Only 300 will be made. You’ll be able to order them through Technics (and yes, you can buy one if you’re in the US).

The brands haven’t specified pricing at this time. However, you can bet they’ll be more expensive than the $899 standard model.

For those interested in the special-edition Kaiser Idell Luxus lamp, that will also be available in October. Only 200 will be made (and it’s an Asia- and Europe-exclusive).

Again, pricing hasn’t been announced, but it’ll likely be more expensive than the standard version of the lamp, which goes for $1,200.

Technics SL-40CBT (Fritz Hansen Special Edition)

This is a special-edition version of the Technics SL-40CBT turntable, released in fall 2025 and is one of the brand’s most entry-level models. It’s a direct-drive turntable with a switchable phono preamplifier and support for Bluetooth streaming. But, being a collaboration with Fritz Hansen, the renowned Danish design brand, this turntable comes in a limited-edition deep burgundy finish. Only 300 models will be made.
