If you’re a millennial like me, there’s a pretty good chance that hearing the term “Sandstorm” immediately turns the techno song of the same name on in your brain. Today, especially if you’re a big fan of EDC and outdoor adventure, that association might change (okay, probably not, but still).

That’s because Leatherman just dropped its Signal Sandstorm, an even more formidable and tough military-inspired edition of arguably its best all-around outdoor multi-tool.

This isn’t just a new colorway; this take on the Signal also gets an upgrade to its durability in two key spots.

Signal boost

Leatherman has a deep catalog. Yet the Signal stands out enough to make our list of the best Leatherman multi-tools you can buy (earning the superlative “Best Leatherman Multi-Tool for Camping”).

This version retains the same form-function as it has always had. For those not in the know, that means it’s equipped with a whopping 19 tools (give or take).

Both the blade and the saw get new Cerakote finishes, complete with desert-inspired camo patterns.

That includes classics like a knife blade, bottle opener, bit driver, pliers and more, as well as more unique and outdoor-ready additions, like a hammer (ideal for camp stakes), carabiner (great for attaching it to your belt or pack) and fire starter.

There are no tricks, swaps, or tweaks. This Signal has all the goodies you’ve come to expect. And trust me: that’s a very good thing.

But, as this is a new release, it is different, which you can clearly see by looking at it. But it’s a lot more than just a new colorway …

Along with the new desert finish and Cerakote coating, the sharpener and ferro rod also get the glow-in-the-dark treatment.

Alexa, play “Sandstorm”

“Sandstorm,” in the case of this Leatherman, refers to this Signal’s new colorway. For those familiar with EDC and outdoor gear, the light tan colorway will probably seem familiar, as it is very common with desert-inspired gear.

But this Signal takes that a step further. The dedicated knife and saw blades also get a desert camo-inspired upgrade, granting this outdoor-friendly multi-tool some classic military-tactical styling.

While the Signal has its own integrated carabiner, it also comes with a matching sheath, should you prefer to be more discreet.

However, it’s not just for looks. That finish is actually Cerakote, a ceramic-based coating, which adds even more durability than the blades would have on their own.

But that’s not all; the included ferro rod and sharpener also get the glow-in-the-dark treatment, which makes the whole tool easier to find in low-light situations (as well as gives it a bit of a throwback vibe).

Just remember: this is a limited-edition version of the Leatherman Signal, so it won’t be around forever.

I think this is, hands-down, Leatherman’s best all-around multi-tool for camping and outdoor adventure.
