Marantz Just Dropped a Traditional CD Player for Entry-Level Audiophiles

The Japanese hi-fi great is the latest audio brand to show that physical media is far from dead.

Marantz has revamped its entry-level hi-fi range with the Model 70 integrated amplifier and the CD 70 CD player.

The latter is more exciting as it once again proves that CDs (and physical media) aren’t going anywhere. Plus, it’s the only new component the Japanese hi-fi giant will sell in the States.

The Marantz CD 70 is the direct successor to the brand’s previous entry-level CD player, the CD6007, which was released in 2020. And naturally, the new model has been upgraded inside and out.

In the press release, the Japanese hi-fi maker says that the CD 70 delivers “an elevated listening experience that remains true to Marantz’s heritage while embracing the expectations of a new generation of audio enthusiasts.”

Upgrades, inside and out

In the last several years, Marantz has revamped the designs of many of its hi-fi components, bringing textured finishes and upgraded displays (including a signature “porthole” display, which it has integrated into the Model 70 amp). And it has brought similar modern aesthetics to the CD 70.

But, naturally, the biggest improvements are under the hood. Marantz has given the CD 70 an upgraded DAC and the brand’s proprietary HDAM circuit design. The company claims “the CD 70 delivers detailed, expressive and emotionally engaging reproduction of compact discs, extracting every nuance from treasured music collections.”

Other improvements with CD 70 include an upgraded power supply, a new double-layered chassis, more rigid isolation feet and strategically deployed copper hardware. According to Marantz, all these upgrades contribute to “improved stability and reduced interference.”

Like the CD6007, the CD 70 also has a dedicated headphone amplifier with a fully discrete circuitry design. This way, you can plug in your headphones and enjoy a private CD-listening session without additional hi-fi components (like an integrated amplifier).

Availability and pricing

Like seemingly everything these days, Marantz has unfortunately increased the price of its entry-level CD player. While the CD6007 is priced at $650 (and it’s still available from most third-party retailers), the CD 70 comes at a $100 premium.

The Marantz CD 70 CD player costs $750 and will be available starting August 15. It comes in black or silver finishes.
