Converse Retools the Classic All Star Sneaker with Heritage Military Style

The company pays unofficial tribute to its military past with a one-off remake inspired by 20th-century bomber jackets.

The Converse All Star needs no introduction, but it could probably use a quick history lesson.

That’s because before it won over pioneering basketball players, ’90s punk rockers and even modern weightlifters, it outfit US troops during both World Wars.

Converse claims it completed more than 50 military contracts throughout the 20th century, with some Navy SEALs reportedly still choosing the company’s iconic canvas sneaker over high-tech combat boots.

While the company has dabbled in camo colorways over the years, the Japan-exclusive All Star MA Nylon OX arrives as an unofficial tribute to Converse’s rich military past.

The new design trades the All Star’s signature canvas upper for one fashioned out of nylon, referencing MA-1 bomber jackets issued to pilots starting in the ’60s.

To reinforce the effect, Converse opted for the classic color combination of sage green contrasted with safety orange for the interior liner. (There’s also a navy blue version available at launch.)

Like other All Stars constructed for the Japanese domestic market, the All Star MA Nylon OX features exclusive material upgrades, including an improved insole and EVA wedge for all-day comfort.

Availability and pricing

The best part? Thanks to current currency rates, the All Star MA Nylon OX costs less than the price of your standard All Star in the States.

Available Friday, August 7, the shoe retails for 9,350 Japanese yen (approximately $59).
