Birkenstock Reunites with Korean Brand Ader Error to Revise the Beloved Boston Clog

The Seoul-based outfit reimagines the German brand’s legendary Boston in two ways, both featuring bold whipstitch details.

When it comes to clogs and slip-on casual footwear, Birkenstock is second to none. But that hasn’t kept the long-standing brand from iterating on and innovating its most iconic staples.

Such is the case with the Birkenstock 1774 x Ader Error Boston Clogs, which sees one of the German brand’s most beloved silhouettes reinterpreted by its South Korean collaborator in two distinct ways, unified by a shared theme.

Different vibe, same clog

Lovers of the classic Boston Clog will be happy to know that most of the shoe’s elements remain intact in this reinterpretation. Think of it less as a reimagining and more as adding to its already spectacular base.

For instance, the upper remains a stunning, textured suede that looks as soft as it feels. The shoe also retains its signature closed-toe design and iconic buckle-fastening strap, so you can be sure this mule remains a snug fit.

That upper also pairs to the brand’s same signature cork footbed, the same one that has been a staple of Birkenstock’s most beloved silhouettes for literal generations. That means, while you wear them, they’ll become more comfortable and mold to your feet, slowly changing into a custom fit.

And on the underside, the shoes retain their signature EVA outsoles, custom-cut for each pair. While being a featherlight addition, they’ll also repel water underfoot, increase shock absorption and remain flexible.

Shipping up to Boston

These reinterpreted Bostons come in two distinct versions, but they do share some stylistic DNA. Ader Error chose to explore these shoes through the concept of “Thread.” As such, thick, obvious stitching is evident throughout the designs.

The subtlest of the two is called the Boston Flap. The only real alteration for the Boston Flap is the titular flap of fabric that folds over the buckle strap. It is fastened to the upper via whipstitching, which is thick and hearkens to handmade footwear like moccasins.

The other is called the Boston Cap, named for the addition of a thick, durable toecap. This shoe also gets whipstitch details, although they are slightly more subdued.

Lastly, both mules feature Ader Error’s signature zigzag-embroidered logo on their outer quarter. Both shoes will be available in multiple colorways and both men’s and women’s sizes.

Availability and pricing

Both of the Birkenstock 1774 x Ader Error Boston Clogs, the Flap and the Cap, will be available on Birkenstock’s 1774 site on August 6, but pricing has not yet been announced.
