Fun fact: Carabiners, as we know them today, were inspired by rifle clips. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that German climber Otto Herzog adapted them for mountain ascents.

Since then, they’ve changed very little, even as they’ve made their way into the world of everyday carry. To this day, they still look and operate largely the same: with an oblong metal body and a spring-loaded metal gate.

But Titaner’s Titanium Belt Keychain alters that concept in a few noteworthy ways, making this version of the classic EDC tool more unique, secure, compact and even convenient than its brethren.

An icon, reinvented

Overall, Titaner’s reimagining of this classic everyday carry tool shares a lot in common with its relatives. It’s still oblong, as it is meant to attach to belts, belt loops and other attachment points (like backpack webbing).

It also still has a gate that opens it up to allow users to attach and detach it from wherever you keep it. However, that’s where things get a little … different.

Instead of a simple spring-loaded gate, this one has a novel two-stage opening (as seen above). To unlock it, users must slide the gate inward (toward the body) and then “flip” it open.

When released, the gate springs back into its closed position, aided by magnets for security. The brand calls this an “Effortless Gravity Lock.”

Rock-solid construction

Unlike other carabiners, this one doesn’t require users to feed a key ring into the body (as is traditional, even with two-compartment carabiners). Instead, there’s a separate, secure ring on the gate itself. This means users need not fear losing their keys accidentally.

To aid its security and strength, the entire tool is made from CNC-machined titanium (as is everything Titaner makes). That means it’s incredibly strong and remarkably lightweight. It’s also highly compact, measuring about the same overall length as a house key.

It’s also completely non-toxic, skin-friendly, and corrosion-resistant (in theory, it’s even surgical-grade, meaning it’s safe to put inside the human body, not that I’d recommend it).

The brand is so confident in its quality and construction that it says this carabiner is good for a whopping 100 years of use. Yes, a full century. There aren’t too many tools that can stand up to that kind of use.
