“The best ability is availability.”

This old adage, often attributed to Hall of Fame NFL coach Bill Parcells, extolls the notion that being an amazing athlete means nothing if you are always injured or otherwise unable to actually play.

Along similar lines, the best multi-tool is not the one with 83 functions; it’s the one that’s simplest to actually bring along.

Leaning into that reasoning is the latest from Ideaspark, the K-Smart X, which rides light and easy on your belt or pack or in your pocket so it’s ready to deliver when you need it most.

Currently more than 1,400% funded on Kickstarter with weeks to go, the K-Smart X is Ideaspark’s fifth edition of a multi-tool it launched back in 2022.

That’s promising, as it indicates a product that’s not only popular enough to stick for years but also one revamped to its most highly evolved form yet.

Designed to slide onto a belt but also perfect for clipping to a backpack, dropping in a pocket or stashing in an EDC sling, the K-Smart X is one slim 4-inch multi-tool offering 10 handy functions, give or take.

These include a combo pry bar/box cutter/nail puller, bottle opener, ¼”  and 1/6″ bit driver, metric/imperial ruler, hex wrench, fire starter and a 360-degree rotatable/releasable keyring, making it easy to detach actual keys when using any of the tools.

As usual, there is a bit of function-flation happening on the campaign page; sorry, Ideaspark, but I refuse to count tritium slots or a keyring hole as “functions.”

The back clip cleverly folds up out of the way when you need to remove it from a belt and/or access the pry bar/box cutter/nail puller.

On the upside, it is made of grade-5 titanium, which offers a ton of strength for its weight, meaning this roughly 1.1-ounce unit can stand up to years of abuse.

Ideaspark also points out that this generation improves upon earlier versions with a leaner form factor, smoother action, more reach, a one-handed bit driver and a textured side grip.

The ruler marks are laser engraved (metric on one side; imperial on the other), ensuring they’ll stick around for years.

It has also ditched the spring in the back clip, which ultimately makes it a bit less fidgety and a lot more durable.

Throw in the fact that right now you can get it for less than $60, and the K-Smart X has a pretty respectable “best” case scenario, no?

Availability and pricing

Ideaspark’s K-Smart X is available now on Kickstarter for the Super Early Bird price of $55. Estimated delivery is September.
