This Top Affordable Mechanical Chronograph Has Never Looked Better

This historical pilot’s watch finally gets the eye-catching dial it deserves.

Hamilton has its fair share of iconic watches, like one of the first automatic chronographs and the definitive military field watch.

However, through the American-turned-Swiss watch brand’s long and prolific history, a few outstanding designs have slipped into obscurity.

The best example is the 6BB “Fab Four” chronograph, a 39mm hand-wound pilot’s watch designed for the RAF in the 1970s. It was faithfully revived in 2022 as the Khaki Pilot Pioneer Mechanical Chronograph.

Hamilton’s nearly-identical replica of the 6BB is a mil-spec masterpiece with a matte black dial, but now that it is relegated to civilian use, it could use some color.

Fortunately, Hamilton updated its revival with a dial matching the blue uniforms the RAF wore in the 1970s. It has a radiant texture that reacts to light but retains the two-tone motif with all-white dial markings.

Into the blue

Even though the Khaki Pilot Pioneer Mechanical Chrono is a revival of a distinct archival watch, Hamilton somewhat confusingly folded it into the Khaki Aviation family.

The title is a variation of the Khaki Pilot Pioneer and the Khaki Pilot Pioneer Mechanical, two watches that look completely unlike each other, and the new Pioneer Chrono.

The only uniting detail of the Khaki Pilot Pioneer watches has been the faux-patina-on-matte-black color scheme. The new Pioneer Chrono breaks that trend with its flashy blue dial.

Snailed sub-dials break up the clean background, marked only with the Hamilton logo. Running seconds are displayed at nine o’clock, and a 30-minute totalizer is placed at three o’clock.

The printed white Arabic markers, with cutouts to accommodate the sub-dials, are coated in Super-LumiNova. Matching lume insets are placed in the white lacquered hour and minute hands.

Off balance

It may cause a double-take, but the Pioneer Chrono has an asymmetrical case. The crown side protrudes slightly, with a gentle lug-to-lug curve.

This isn’t exactly a crown guard because the crown still sticks out when pressed in. The design allows the crown and pushers to be slightly recessed, preventing discomfort from either one digging into the back of a bent wrist.

The case is one millimeter wider than the original 6BB because it runs on a slightly larger movement, Hamilton’s caliber H-51-Si. This new-ish movement debuted in 2021 with the hand-wound Intra-Matic.

Based on the ETA caliber 7753, it beats at 28,800vph, has a 60-hour power reserve and a silicone balance spring.

The Khaki Pilot Pioneer Mechanical Chrono is available on a brown leather pin buckle strap or steel mesh bracelet with a folding clasp.

The Khaki Pilot Pioneer Mechanical Chrono has an intriguing military history and finally has an eye-catching dial suitable for daily wear on the ground. Aside from the clunky name, this is one of the most underrated watches in Hamilton’s impressive catalog, and one of the best mechanical chronographs you can get for the money anywhere.

Availability and price

While it doesn’t make much sense on a retro-inspired military pilot’s watch, the new steel mesh bracelet option, borrowed from the Intra-Matic, maximizes the blue dial’s visual appeal.

The Hamilton Khaki Pilot Pioneer Mechanical Chrono is available now from Hamilton. It costs $2,195 on a brown leather strap and $2,245 on a steel mesh bracelet.
