Since its introduction near the end of 2022, the C1 Bel Canto has ranked as Christopher Ward‘s flagship watch, redefining not only what the brand is capable of but also changing the idea of what an affordable grail watch looks like.

In November of last year, CW launched what is arguably the ultimate version of the Bel Canto with the Lumière. While the original Bel Canto was all about sound with its sonnerie au passage complication that chimes at the top of every hour, the Lumière amped up the visual interest with a fully lumed display.

With its bright green dial, the Lumière is a lot visually, and not everyone is a fan of its over-the-top look. But now CW has returned to the Bel Canto Lumière well with a new version called the Nova that offers the same insane luminosity in a more understated package.

Super Nova

The Nova is the same watch as the original Bel Canto Lumière, which has now been given the additional moniker “Neon,” just with a different color scheme.

While the original featured lines of green lume emanating from the watch face at 12:00 and stretching across the entire dial, the Nova features white rays of Super-LumiNova instead. This creates a much cleaner look that allows the rest of the watch’s dial to shine. There is now less to distract from viewing the chiming complication and its signature “songbird” striking mechanism, which had become visually lost on the original Lumière.

But that’s only true during the daytime. In the dark, the dial has the exact same lume signature as the previous Lumière, with the luminous dial glowing green under the watch face and blue on the rest of the dial.

Speaking of the watch face, it remains a smoked sapphire disc encircled by a turquoise Globolight solid ceramic lume ring with skeletonized hands tipped with matching Globolight inserts.

The case and movement remain the same, too. The former measures 41mm across in Grade 5 titanium with a solid, screwed-in caseback and is topped with a tall box sapphire crystal that stretches the overall thickness to 13.65mm. A 2:00 crown winds and sets the watch, while a 4:00 pusher toggles the automatic chiming mechanism on and off.

The movement, of course, is the Christopher Ward Calibre FS01, which is a Sellita SW200-1 topped with the brand’s in-house chiming module, a modification of its earlier in-house jump-hour module. The power reserve is 41 hours with a beat rate of 4Hz.

Lastly, we have the textured rubber strap, which is the inverse of the “Neon” version. It’s turquoise with a white lining rather than the other way around. This was a smart choice, in my opinion, as it increases the contrast of the watch’s overall aesthetic.

Availability and pricing

I think the Nova is a smart move by CW. While I thought the original Lumière was incredibly cool, I was unsure about whether or not I could pull it off, given its visual overload of green lume. The dial of this new version looks far less busy thanks to its use of white lume, making it easier to wear for most people, yet it still glows just as brightly in the dark. That’s a “win-win” in my book.

The C1 Bel Canto Lumière Nova is available for preorder now from Christopher Ward for the same price as the Neon version at $4,995. Deliveries will commence at the end of September.
