Monday, September 22, 2025 is the official start of fall this year, and I couldn’t be happier to welcome back the crisp air, shorter days and falling temperatures of shoulder season.

It turns out, Outdoor Research can’t wait either. As part of its Fall 25 Collection release, the outdoor stalwart released a quietly technical layering piece that the brand is calling, “most versatile insulator in the OR collection.”

Seeing as how OR helps set the bar in terms of technical apparel, this is quite a claim. Can this workhorse jacket live up to its self-imposed hype?

While Patagonia and Arc’teryx oftentimes take the mantle for style-forward designs that bridge form and function, the Vesper Insulated Hoodie will give its a competitors a run for their money this season, thanks to a pared-down aesthetic and unique colorways like Winterberry and Rainforest. At 12.1 ounces this isn’t an ultra-lightweight design, but it won’t weigh you down, should you need to toss it in your daypack.
