Simaudio is a heritage Canadian hi-fi manufacturer with a history dating back to 1980. It’s best known for the reference-grade audio components in its North Collection, which range from $11,000 to $25,000.

But now the brand has launched the Compass Collection, comprised of more entry-level” hi-fi components with trickle-down technologies from its North Collection. And the first product in the series is the Moon 371. According to the brand, it sets a “fresh benchmark for modern audio systems.”

But make no mistake, it’s still out of most people’s price brackets.

The Moon 371 is a super versatile “just add speaker” amplifier that’s designed for modern audiophiles. It combines a power amplifier, preamplifier, DAC, network player, and phono stage into a single box with a beautiful color display.

For brevity’s sake, let’s refer to it as a high-end streaming amplifier.

Trickle-down tech

As an amplifier, it’s beefy. It’s capable of powering 200 watts into 4 ohms or 100 watts into 8 ohms, meaning it should be fully able to drive a wide range of high-end loudspeakers.

Notably, Simaudio integrated it with several proprietary technologies from its flagship North Collection, including the MHP power supply, which promises to provide ultra-stable power, and the MDCA distortion-canceling amplifier, which aims to deliver an exceptionally clean, dynamic sound.

Like the brand’s other streamers, the Moon 371 operates on its Mind 2 streaming platform, which offers native support for most of today’s Wi-Fi streaming protocols, including Apple AirPlay, Spotify Connect, Tidal Connect, and Qobuz Connect.

It’s Roon Ready and supports Bluetooth streaming as well.

Elsewhere, Moon 371 features a high-quality phono stage that supports both moving-magnet (MM) and moving-coil (MC) cartridges, and thus should work with a wide range of turntables.

And it sports a diverse array of both analog and digital inputs, including USB-C and HDMI eARC, so you could technically make it the hub of your home’s desktop or home theater system.

Price and availability

As mentioned, while the Moon 371 is one of the brand’s more affordable options, it’s still a far cry from cheap. It costs $6,500, making still one of the most expensive streaming amplifiers out there.

It’s available now from Simaudio’s website and authorized retailers.s
