Everyday carry is all about striking a balance between functionality and carry-friendliness. Unfortunately, compromises are often necessary, even with gear widely considered the best of the best.

This is especially true in the world of multi-tools. Leatherman’s offerings, for instance, are the gold standard for many; however, they are often bulky and boast more functions than necessary for the average EDC user. On the other hand, more minimalist offerings don’t offer the same utility.

Tacray’s new MT1 multi-tools look to split the difference with a highly carry-friendly format and exceptionally well-considered array of functions and materials.

Goldilocks EDC multi-tool

So, what sets this multi-tool apart from the myriad other options on the market? Firstly, its size. Closed, the MT1 measures just 3.35 inches long — about the same as an average EDC knife (if not slightly smaller.) With its tools extended, it’s only 5.67 inches total.

Furthermore, because the base tool is crafted from either aluminum or titanium (depending on your chosen configuration,) it’s also exceptionally lightweight. At most, it weighs 3.16 ounces (and as little as 2.98 ounces.) For reference, Leatherman’s best-selling ARC weighs a whopping 8.6 ounces.

Depending on your chosen configuration, the knife blade can be built from either 10Cr15MoV or M390.

But its size is only part of the story. Along with being compact and lightweight, other elements make it exceptionally carry-friendly. For instance, it has a reversible, removable pocket clip.

Better still, its tools are operable one-handed — meaning you can retrieve it from your pocket and deploy it while your other hand is busy. As if that’s not enough, the tools also lock (and the locks are similarly operable with one hand.)

Choose your destiny

EDC-friendliness won’t do much good if the included tools aren’t as useful as possible, right? No worries; the Tacray MT1 has you covered on that front, as well.

The tool is broken up into three parts. The first is the body, which houses the reversible pocket clip, a tungsten glass-breaker tip (which is also removable) and an integrated multi-functional USB-C rechargeable flashlight. That last tool is as uncommon as it is handy, especially once the sun goes down.

The second is the knife blade. Depending on the configuration, the 2.23-inch tanto blade is made from either 10Cr15MoV or M390 steel (the latter costing a higher premium.) Either way, it’s big, tough and capable enough to get all common EDC cutting jobs done.

Lastly, opposite the knife blade is another folding implement. Also locking, it features a driver tip (which doubles as a pry bar,) seatbelt cutter (also known as a gut hook,) bottle opener and can opener.

If you’re keeping count, that’s eight functions (or more.) And they’re all useful either in your day-to-day or in emergencies (which I’d rather have but not need than need and not have.) In a package smaller, sturdier and more convenient than most EDC knives, that’s a pretty spectacular value proposition.

Pricing and availability

The Taycray MT1 multi-tools launched this morning on Kickstarter, and they’re already fully-funded — meaning they’re headed to production. But there’s still plenty of time to secure your own, starting at just $50.
