As much as I love the idea of an EDC multi-tool, some of the heavy hitters aren’t as pocket-friendly as we’ve all been led to believe. And yes, I’m talking about big hits, including Leatherman’s best offerings.

Tacray came out with one last year that skirted the bulk without losing its utility or formidability. And now, the Tacray MT1 is back with a duo of new editions, including a military tactical-inspired version.

Pocket powerhouse

To truly understand the balance of utility and EDC-friendliness of the MT1, you should probably first look at its size specs. When closed, this multi-tool measures just 3.5 inches.

At its longest (with its blade deployed), it measures 5.67 inches. It also measures 1.18 inches wide and 0.51 inches deep. Pair that with its light weight (2.89 ounces), and you’ve got a multi-tool that takes up little more room than a standard, dedicated, full-sized EDC knife.

Both of the MT1’s deployable tools come with their own locks, increasing their stability and security.

It’s also built rock-solid, with an aluminum frame that’s as lightweight as it is durable and stable. And the implements are built from 10Cr15MoV steel, which is roughly equivalent to VG-10.

It also gets a pocket clip, making it even easier to slip in and out of your pocket on demand. In simple terms, this EDC multi-tool is highly pocket-friendly yet tough and durable.

And we haven’t even gotten to its utility yet…

Genuine EDC utility

The MT1 has over eight integrated tools. One, perhaps obviously, is its integrated, dedicated tanto knife blade. Several of the others can be found opposite that blade, in a second deployable implement. But here’s the best part: both are independently locking, making them more secure in use.

That secondary implement, by the way, includes a bottle opener, driver, seatbelt cutter and pry bar. Then, down at the base of the knife, there’s a glass breaker, perfect for emergency usage.

According to the brand, this is the only EDC multi-tool with an integrated flashlight, locking blade and eight essential tools.

But perhaps the most interesting and surprisingly useful element of all is the MT1’s onboard flashlight. Rechargeable by USB-C and capable of producing up to 260 lumens across three brightnesses, it is highly utilitarian and helpful at night, in dark areas (like an engine bay) and more.

The two new versions of the MT1 retain all that utility and the same build, but get some big style upgrades. The first sees a jungle camouflage applied to its frame, giving it military tactical vibes, while the other is a toxic green and red that’s a bit more apocalyptic.

While the styling is upgraded, the rest of what made this tool so fantastic remains.
