Let’s be real, how often are you “in the field”?

Singapore/Malaysia-based microbrand RZE has carved out a nice little niche for itself in the crowded affordable watch space with its focus on approachable titanium tool watches, all of which boast the brand’s proprietary UltraHex anti-scratch coating.

The brand’s first model, the Resolute, debuted back in 2020 during the brief period when the brand called itself Reiss. And while the Reiss name was replaced by RZE long ago, the Resolute remains in the brand’s catalog as its flagship field watch and as a perfect representation of what the brand does so well: make tough tool watches that are affordable and stylish.

Now, RZE has expanded its Resolute line with a new offering in 36mm. But this isn’t just a shrunken-down version of the 40mm field watch; it features a more elevated design that’s meant to be worn in a wider variety of situations.

Play the field

The Resolute 36 keeps the bigger Resolute’s signature angular case design, but it now features a bit of polish around the bezel and is thinner than ever, clocking in at just 9.5mm thick. That’s 1mm thinner than the 40mm version, and decidedly svelte for what is ostensibly a field watch, making the 36mm version almost dressy. It’s also the lightest watch RZE has ever produced at, get this, 36 grams (or 90 on the bracelet).

Further helping in the dressy regard is the completely redesigned dial. While the original Resolute features a large triangle index at 12:00 and large bar indices elsewhere, all heavily filled with Super-LumiNova, the 36 goes in a different direction.

Its applied indices are thin and faceted, with more metal on display than lume. The hands are also new, and are what I can best describe as angular leaf hands. Like the indices, their lume application has been reduced to a narrow strip.

The dial is all-new for the Resolute 36, and it’s much more detailed than its big brother.

The dial has changed too, from a simple flat dial to a stepped one with multiple finishes. The minute track and center of the dial both feature a sunray pattern, while the hour markers all sit on a granular-textured track. A white inner ring marks off the center section of the dial, emulating a classic military time scale on a field watch but featuring tiny triangles instead of numerical markers.

While the Resolute 36 looks quite classy — it honestly looks more sports watch than field watch, at this point — it’s still as tough as you’d expect from RZE.

Its case and bracelet are crafted from the brand’s highly durable UltraHex titanium, it has a screw-down crown and screw-down caseback with a Viton gasket guaranteeing 100m of water resistance, a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, and its titanium H-link bracelet is equipped with the brand’s exclusive Quikcliq (I really hate how they spell that) tool-free micro-adjustment system.

Pricing and availability

At launch, there are four distinct colorways for the Resolute 36. Waypoint, AKA black, is the safest choice, but the other three are more interesting. Halcyon is a periwinkle blue, Mojito a medium green, and then there’s Tempo, a deep, fiery red that’s my personal favorite.

Regardless of which Miyota 9039-powered version of the watch you choose, the price remains the same and decidedly RZE. In other words, it’s absurdly affordable at just $680. The Resolute 36 is available to preorder now from RZE’s site, with shipping expected to begin on November 3.
