As a brand, G-Shock has extended its reach across a somewhat strange expanse. Many of its designs have been embraced by at least a segment of the fashion and streetwear industries, especially the brand’s most iconic square-shaped timepieces.

However, the brand is also favored by tacticians, outdoorsmen and other kinds of adventurers, especially when it comes to its exceptionally robust Master of G series watches.

G-Shock’s latest release, the Master of G Frogman GW-8200TPF-1JR, may appeal to both crowds for numerous reasons. Either way, there’s no denying that it’s a bold new entry.

That girl is poison

While I wouldn’t go so far as to call Master of G watches tame, this particular Frogman stands out for its incredibly bold design. That said, there is a specific reason this watch looks the way it does, and it makes perfect sense.

The bright green stripes and black base are inspired directly by a Poison Dart Frog, an amphibian from Central and South America known for its highly toxic excretions (which are traditionally used on the tips of darts crafted by indigenous peoples of the region, hence the name.) As such, it’s a surprisingly appropriate design for a Frogman dive watch.

The colorway also serves to illustrate another element of the watch: the design on the case is unbroken as it reaches down the strap, as the exterior of the case and the integrated strap are both made of the same resin material.

Other stylistic elements that evoke the larger Frogman lineup include the iconic frog logo, engraved on the caseback and visible when the backlight is illuminated, hidden behind the dial display.

But the bold styling is only a part of the story. The watch’s build and capabilities are arguably even more significant.

Holy diver

Typically, G-Shock watches have a few elements in common. The most significant is probably the shockproof housing, which gives the brand its name. This watch maintains that.

When one of the brand’s offerings features a metal case, it is typically made of stainless steel, which is then covered in resin and paired with a matching resin strap. While this watch maintains the resin, as mentioned, it swaps the stainless steel case for one that’s even lighter and tougher: titanium.

That’s the most significant alteration with this new Frogman, but it’s not the only thing that makes the timepiece a stand-out. The watch also features the brand’s Tough Solar movement, which charges with sunlight, so you never have to worry about swapping the battery — just wear it outdoors, as intended, and it will stay juiced-up.

The case is also rated for depths of up to 200 meters — appropriate, as it’s a dive watch — and is loaded with a typical suite of onboard features. The complications include a diving function (which measures depth traveled,) moon phase and tide display, world timer, stopwatch, five onboard alarms, full auto calendar and more.
