This Rugged, Affordable Chronograph Captures the Spirit of Off-Road Adventure

The International Scout is one of the most iconic off-roaders of all time. While the nameplate was defunct for a time, Volkswagen has promised to revive it — although the German brand sure is taking its sweet time (even going so far as to utilize Scout for other projects).

That said, the revival is coming … eventually. In the meantime, the brand’s fans can get a little taste, albeit in a somewhat surprising way. Launched today, December 11, the Scout x Vero Workhorse Chrono takes the SUV’s iconic styling and pares it into a rugged, adventure-focused pair of timepieces.

Backcountry beater

As the name suggests, the base watch for this launch is the Vero Workhorse Chrono. Even without the Scout collaboration, it’s a pretty spectacular budget-friendly, well, workhorse watch.

Housed within its case is a stalwart Japanese Miyota 6S21 Chronograph movement — a quartz mechanism that, while being highly reliable and accurate, contributes to keeping the watch very budget-friendly.

That movement’s functionality is controlled by a pair of rubberized steel bullhorns and a duo of large pusher buttons. It’s housed in a 316L stainless steel case with a Cerakote finish (a classic durability-boosting EDC coating) that’s further protected by bully bars — an element that adds plenty of character to an already distinct watch.

The beefy 44.5-millimeter case is mated to a Velcro nylon strap that matches its case color, making for an easily-adjustable wear no matter where your adventures take you. Speaking of case color…

Time for adventure

So, what sets this watch apart from its brethren? The exclusive styling was taken directly from Scout’s legendary SUV.

The watch is available in two distinct colorways. One is called Terra Orange and hearkens to Scout’s off-road heritage, dating to a color called Terra Cotta that was found on the Scout II.

The other, Traveler Blue, is a bit more subdued and under the radar, but it is no less distinct and authentic to Scout. Its inspiration, Moonstone Blue, dates back as far as 1965 on the Scout 80.

As mentioned, the colorways extend to both the cases and the straps (and even the bully bars).

Other details include AR-coated sapphire crystals, triple-gasket screw-down crowns, 20-millimeter strap widths and 120-meter water-resistance ratings.

It’s worth noting, too, that these are special editions, of which only 500 were made. So, they won’t be around for long — especially when you consider how affordable they are.

Pricing and availability

The Scout x Vero Workhorse Chrono is now available on Vero’s site for $450. However, it’s a limited release; only 500 total units (350 blue & 150 orange) are available.
