Based in Seattle and in continuous operation for well over 120 years, Filson is one of the most significant American gear and apparel outfitters, bar none. As you might expect, this means it has a deep and far-ranging catalog of offerings.

I mention this so you understand the significance of the fact that the brand’s Rugged Twill Backpack has been among its best-selling products for years.

Yet, even among its peers, the latest take, the Filson Workshop Rugged Twill Backpack, is special. This small-batch bag elevates the long-running staple to new heights.

Looks can be deceiving

The base structure and silhouette of this bag remain true to its siblings. In fact, the exterior material is a version of the same Rugged Twill that Filson has employed across many products.

For reference, it’s a 100-percent cotton woven fabric with a tear strength that exceeds 1,400 pounds — yes, really. That makes it far more durable than you might expect a cotton-based material to be.

It also has a dry-wax finish that’s resistant to water, mud and plenty more. And yet, that’s not even the most special part about it.

While its properties are all clearly exceptional, the backpack’s appearance might be its most unique element. That’s because this version features a house-developed Maple Bark Camo pattern.

Old-school craft, modern amenities

The bag’s body fabric is only a part of what makes it exceptional. Exterior-wise, its straps are also more craft-focused and unique.

Instead of typical nylon, the straps have been swapped for a far more unusual cotton webbing. And that webbing is mated to harness leather tightening straps via copper rivets. Per the brand, “This vegetable-tanned leather is strong enough for horse tack and tough enough for a lifetime of service.”

While the bag has a lot of heritage-focused elements, it isn’t without modern amenities, as well. For instance, the main compartment has a laptop pouch inside of it, backed by EVA foam for a bit of extra protection.

Other notable elements include heavy-gauge brass YKK zippers — on both the main compartment and the smaller external pocket — and a 23-liter capacity that’s perfect for light travel and everyday carry purposes.
