For all we hear about the likes of Triumph and Royal Enfield, they are hardly the only legacy-loaded British-born brands producing great-looking, reliable motorcycles.

Flying well under the radar is AJS Motorcycles, which dates back to 1909, when brothers Harry, George, Jack and Joe Stevens began building bikes to take on the legendary Isle of Man TT and other races.

From its round headlight, gauge and mirrors to its sculpted tank, number plate and bench seat, the JFT-125 nails the retro scrambler vibes.

A competitive high point came in 1968, when Malcolm Davis won the British 250 Championship on an ASJ Y4 250 Scrambler.

That bike’s spirit lives on in the JFT-125, a new moto that combines bang-on retro scrambler styling, easy approachability and a wallet-friendly price tag.

“Scramble” on

I should point out that like all AJS bikes, the JFT-125 is limited to the UK market. It’s a small brand that specializes in small bikes — of their nine offerings, the biggest is the 250cc Sedona cruiser.

The JFT-125 is also perhaps a scrambler more in looks than in optimal use — I would recommend something like the Tempest Scrambler or at least some beefier tires if you intend to seriously off-road.

Those factors are not enough to stop me from daydreaming about this bike, which promises plenty of smiles per mile for less than (the UK equivalent of) $4,500.

At 125cc and making 12.5 horsepower, the 6-speed manual-controlled four-stroke engine is obviously sized and powered for urban and rural roads (not the highway).

But with a dry weight of just 282 pounds, it should prove delightfully nimble, even for newer riders. (Just get ready to one foot it if you are on the shorter side — the seat height is 32.3 inches.)

Adding to the approachability are rider-friendly ergos, including tapered alloy bars with click-adjustable levers and sculpted bench seat, enabling you to find a confident and comfortable position.

That’s on point for a bike classified as “learner-legal,” meaning UK/European riders with the entry-level A2 license can saddle up.

Enabling light off-roading, the JFT-125 rides out the bumps with inverted forks boasting heavy-duty alloy yokes, plus a single adjustable rear shock and anodized alloy swingarm.

Linked braking, meanwhile, delivers safe, smooth stopping power.

The bike also offers a clear LED digital display and a bit of convenience you might not expect at this price: both a side and center stand make for fuss-free parking and easier maintenance.

Availability and pricing

The 2026 AJF JFT-125 rolls into UK dealers later this month at a starting price of £3,299, roughly $4,400.
