The Eames Lounge Chair is one of the most iconic and recognizable designs to ever exist.

Introduced in 1956, the chair is best known in its classic configuration: a Santos Palisander veneer shell (originally produced in Brazilian rosewood) paired with black leather upholstery.

Now, Herman Miller has introduced a new heathered wool upholstery option that’s subtly stunning in its own right … and boasts a (slightly) lower price and greater sustainability, as well.

Sitting pretty

The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman were already available in over 50 upholstery choices and material combinations, but the latest option to be added to the available possibilities stands out for a few reasons.

Luce is a rich, tactile heathered wool woven in Italy, but its sophisticated look and texture aren’t the only attributes the fabric has going for it: thanks to its manufacturing process, Luce is more sustainable than other fabric options, without losing any of its luxe appeal.

Made with over 75 percent post-consumer recycled wool garments, Luce fabric is manufactured by shedding those repurposed fibers and then spinning them back into yarn.

An offset twill weave adds texture while highlighting the heathered yarns and elegant shades. Luce is available in ten hues, from cozy neutrals like Brioche to bold Clarion, a sunshiney yellow.

As a bonus, Luce isn’t just more sustainable than virgin fabrics; it’s also less expensive.

Although the Lounge Chair is most certainly an investment at over $5,000 for any variation, the Luce upholstery is more affordable than its leather counterparts, making the icon slightly more accessible.

Availability and pricing

The Eames Lounge Chair in Luce upholstery is available via Herman Miller’s website, beginning at $5,495.
