Toyota just released a teaser for what could either be a new compact pickup or an all-new SUV. The Japanese auto giant released a statement, with a heavily shadowed image of a new car and its taillight illuminated, and similar on its social media pages.

Details are sparse. However, some speculate that it could potentially be a new, ultra-affordable compact pickup truck. Others suggest it could be a new SUV.

Either way, from what we can see from the picture, it definitely isn’t a normal sedan or coupe.

Many seem to think that this new Toyota truck is a new small pickup, which will likely sit below the Tacoma. Rumors began floating around about a possible new compact pickup after Ford proved the segment’s success with the Maverick.

No specifics or details have really come to light to bolster the rumors. But considering some circumstances, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to lean in on the theory.

That’s because pickup trucks of all sizes are a huge sell and cash cow, especially in America. Toyota, who sells some of the most popular models, obviously isn’t going to leave a segment unfulfilled.

One can also see in the teaser that the roofline appears to be slightly recessed and away from the rear trunk line, where the taillight bar spans. This visual detail gives the impression that there may be an open bed, which bolsters the possibility of the model being a new pickup.

…Or, it could be a new electric SUV or pickup

Others think that Toyota’s new model could potentially be a new SUV. More specifically, an all-electric one.

Despite Toyota being open about its reluctance to embrace electrification, it isn’t fully opposed to the propulsion system. While the company is still investing in internal combustion engines, it’s also continuing development with its gas-electric hybrid system and even its electric powertrains.

Toyota’s strategy involves offering its models with the choice of all three powertrains to provide customers choice.

Previously, we reported on the rumor that Toyota is working on a new, all-electric unibody-based Land Cruiser pickup. That’s the last rumor we heard of, regarding any new high-rider.

Either way, we won’t know what it is until Toyota spills the beans and pulls the wraps.
