To paraphrase a line from Casino Royale: There are sports watch brands and sports watch brands. Norqain is the latter.

The young independent Swiss brand is somewhat rare within the luxury watch industry in that its sports watches are actually designed for playing sports. The brand’s flagship, the lightweight and shock-resistant Wild One Skeleton, is frequently spotted on the wrists of pro tennis players and other athletes.

Back in November, Norqain made its biggest investment in sport yet when it announced that it had reached a deal with the NHL to become the official luxury watch of the world’s premiere hockey league.

Now, we’re seeing the fruits of that partnership with Norqain’s first official NHL watch.

Power play

The Adventure Chrono 41mm NHL Limited Edition is exactly what it sounds like: a special NHL version of Norqain’s sporty 41mm chronograph.

The watch is filled with myriad little details that point to the NHL partnership, which makes for a fun scavenger hunt of sorts. Most prominent of these hockey Easter eggs is the white textured dial, which has a “scratched ice” effect meant to resemble a mid-game rink.

The 9:00 subdial, which tracks the running seconds of the main timekeeping, is done in the style of a white face-off circle with red markings and features crossed hockey sticks on a transparent disc, with a puck in the center acting as the running seconds hand.

The other subdials — the 30-minute chronograph register at 12:00 and 12-hour counter at 6:00 — are both black with red hands, and the latter features the NHL logo. The inner bezel features a pulsometer scale with the word “Timeout” and a timeout hand symbol at the 200 mark, which the brand says is a nod to the rapid pace of NHL play.

The sapphire display caseback is adorned with the NHL logo and the limited-edition number out of 1,917 — the year the league was founded. The caseback decals partially obscure the view of the nicely decorated movement, which is the Norqain Calibre N17 automatic chronograph, based on the Sellita SW500 a. It beats at 4Hz and has a power reserve of 62 hours.

Then there’s the strap, which looks like a plain ol’ black rubber strap with a subtle NHL logo, but it actually incorporates material from a hockey puck. Does this serve any performance benefit? No. Is it a damn cool detail and great icebreaker? Yep.

Last but not least, we have the box, which might be my favorite part of this whole collab. The inside is styled to look like an NHL hockey rink, with a spot for the watch on the left and a regulation NHL puck on the right. It’s the rare watchbox that I would actually want to display — if I were into hockey, anyway.

Pricing and availability

As I mentioned already, the Adventure Chrono 41mm NHL Limited Edition is limited to just 1,917 pieces, and it’s currently in stock at Norqain’s website.

Pricing varies depending on your strap option. The cheapest version is on a pin-buckle strap, which is priced at $5,490. If you opt for a steel deployant clasp, the price climbs to $5,680. Most expensive is if you decide you’d rather have a matching steel bracelet, which retails for a hair more at $5,690.
