Hoka may now be synonymous with commuter comfort, but the king of cushion began its ascent with a revolutionary trail shoe called the Mafate.
Named after the Cirque de Mafate caldera on Réunion Island, the design broke all convention with a chunky yet shockingly lightweight silhouette that ran counter to the minimalist trends of the era.

It must have struck some sort of chord.
Today Hoka posts north of $2 billion in sales, while the Mafate has become its own mini empire of sorts.
The franchise now includes trail runners, super shoes, lifestyle sneakers and, as of 2026, a bone fide hiking boot.
