Did Ikea Accidentally Create the Ultimate Affordable Tent Accessory?

The Swedish home brand’s new release is a budget outdoor organizer that dedicated camping brands don’t want you to discover.

When Ikea released the Tigerfink hanging organizer, the Swedish furniture giant likely envisioned it corralling toys in a playroom or storing style accessories in a closet.

But take one look at its mesh compartments, lightweight design, and hook-friendly hanging system, and you might start thinking less about home organization and more about your next camping trip.

The solution to camping clutter?

At just 10 ounces and $10, the Tigerfink delivers five mesh compartments with tent-pole-friendly hanging loops at less than a third of the cost of camping-specific alternatives.

Anyone who has spent a few nights living out of a tent knows the challenge: a low-ceilinged room packed with sleeping bags, pads, and gear becomes a black hole for small but essential items. Losing a headlamp, phone, or camp knife in the dark can turn a relaxing evening into a frustrating scavenger hunt.

The problem becomes particularly acute in larger tents where family members compete for floor space and organization quickly breaks down.

Marmot’s Birdhouse line of organizers has stood largely unchallenged in the camping accessory market as a way of organizing cluttered tents. While Ikea’s Tigerfink can’t compete with the Birdhouse’s robust clip and thicker materials, it also costs a third as much and offers more storage shelves, assuming it fits in your tent.

Outdoor brands have long recognized this pain point. Marmot offers its Birdhouse hanging organizer with three shelves for $35, while lesser-known brands sell similar products on Amazon for around $22.

Even specialty canvas tent makers like Kodiak Canvas provide pocket-style organizers designed specifically for camp life. These solutions work, but they also come at a premium that reflects their camping-specific branding and materials.

Grand Trunk’s Adventure Shelf line is also a very smart and functional option for capturing campsite chaos, but the large-sized option with equivalent shelving matches Ikea’s Tigerfink. But it’s also slightly heavier at 12.8 ounces, compared to the Tigerfink’s 10 ounces, which may make it harder to hang in certain tents.

Enter the Ikea Tigerfink. With five compartments instead of three or four, this $10 organizer offers more storage capacity at less than a third of the price of the Marmot alternative. It also weighs just 10 ounces empty.

Its mesh construction provides the same visibility benefits campers need, while the triangular hanging loop at the top should work with most tent pole configurations.

The beige and orange colorway might scream Scandinavian home decor, but in the dim light of a tent, that hardly matters.

This isn’t the first time Ikea’s inadvertently released what appears to be an excellent budget camping accessory. The Marulk 21-piece picnic set (shown above) was released this summer and immediately looked like an excellent, affordable option for campsite cutlery. And it also costs just $9.99
Ikea

This isn’t the first time Ikea has inadvertently created outdoor gear gold. The company’s Frakta storage bag is already considered an excellent ultra-budget gear hauler, and its Marulk Pinic Set is a surprisingly strong competitor against plenty of camping-centric cutlery sets.

Whether the Tigerfink works for your specific camping setup will depend on a few key factors. Your tent needs adequate vertical clearance to hang the organizer without it dragging on the ground.

You’ll also need a tent pole structure that accommodates the triangular hanging loop. And while the mesh material is lightweight, loading all five compartments with gear could exceed the weight capacity of smaller tent poles or fabric attachments.

At $10, however, the risk of buying it and it not working out is minimal.

The Tigerfink is currently available at Ikea stores and online, offering an accessible entry point for campers looking to bring a bit more organization to their outdoor sleeping quarters or adventure trailer.
