A Long-Lost Line of Enthusiast Dream Cars Is Coming Back from the Grave

Mercedes-AMG’s Black Series is coming back.

One of the most revered lines of German high-performance cars is making a comeback. Mercedes-AMG’s outgoing head honcho, Michael Schiebe, just recently announced the eventual return of Stuttgart’s beloved Black Series models.

Speaking to our friends at Car and Driver, Schiebe confirmed the lineup’s revival during a recent media event. And for those who forgot what they were, AMG’s Black Series was Mercedes-Benz’s range of special-edition, harder-edged, ultra-high-performance models built in the late 2000s up through the early 2020s.

Mercedes-AMG’s making performance dream cars once again

It’s been roughly three years since AMG rolled out a Black Series model. The last one was the first-generation Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, built from 2021 to 2023.

Previously, the lineup consisted of other extra-fast models based on the C209 CLK 63, R230 SL 65, R171 SLK 55, W204 C 63 and the SLS AMG supercar. The first Black Series model was the CLK 63, which debuted back in 2007, and only 500 were made.

Like BMW’s CS (Competition Sport) models, the Black Series variants featured track-tuned suspension and chassis modifications, more aerodynamic bodywork, significant weight reduction measures and, of course, more power. It all amounted to some of the fastest and most aggressive Three-Point Stars ever to hit pavement.

Because of their high specification and limited production numbers, the AMG Black Series cars are some of the most collectible modern Mercedes-Benz models today.

Schiebe didn’t specify which cars would be making a comeback or which future models would receive the Black Series treatment. However, he did say they will return, implying they’ll live alongside AMG’s latest Mythos lineup.

More extreme AMG cars, just not Mythos extreme

Not too long ago, Mercedes-AMG launched its Mythos sub-brand as another range of ultra-exclusive and extreme performance models, slotting above the Mercedes-Maybach lineup. While Maybach focuses more on opulence and luxury, Mythos sits at the other side of the spectrum as the ultimate high-performance branch.

Although Schiebe didn’t elaborate on how the new Black Series would sit in the lineup, speculation suggests the cars could be in-betweeners. They’d likely slot above standard AMGs, for those who want something a little more aggressive than your standard run-of-the-mill AMG models.

But they also probably won’t be as hard-edged as the Mythos cars, which are shaping up to be some of the most extreme AMG cars ever.

“We have been very successful with it. This is such a strong brand, it’s an obligation,” Schiebe told C/D. “If you want to develop a Black Series, then it really has to convince in terms of performance. It needs to be radical. But we want to definitely carry that into the future.”

Mercedes finally and openly embraces its love for performance and speed

It wasn’t too long ago when Mercedes-Benz was coy about its performance aspirations. Once (and still) a purveyor of some of the finest luxury and premium cars to roam the land, the automaker often flew under the radar, while its crosstown rivals more openly boasted their passion for going fast.

Mercedes-Benz models did often set performance benchmarks. But they did so unexpectedly, which defined the brand’s reputation for understated speed. Now, Stuttgart’s finest is looking to push beyond the envelope even further in what appears to be an effort to draw younger, more enthusiastic buyers to the brand.

There’s no better way to do so than to make some epic high-performance cars to show up its rivals from Zuffenhausen and Munich.
