This Daring Field Watch Just Got a Surprisingly Badass Makeover

When in doubt, black it out.

Last year at Watches and Wonders, Bremont shocked the watch community by going against type and launching a jumping hour watch. The model was a significant departure from the brand’s utilitarian, pilot-watch roots.

It was the clearest signal yet that the brand had entered a new era under its recently appointed CEO, Davide Cerrato, an industry veteran who counts the jump-hour as his favorite complication.

Despite my initial skepticism about the watch, it turned out to be a seriously smart move for Bremont. At the same show, Cartier launched its own jump-hour watch, and the category has since become one of the hottest trends in watchmaking. Audemars Piguet even joined the party with a brand-new model line earlier this month.

The Terra Nova Jumping Hour has become a bestseller for Bremont, with limited editions of the model even selling out. Now, the brand has seemingly merged its past and present with a new, more rugged, stealthy take on its jump-hour watch that wouldn’t look out of place in a fighter jet’s cockpit.

This has to be the coolest take yet on Bremont’s surprise hit watch.

Jump around

Bremont has taken the guichet version of its Terra Nova 38 Jumping Hour — the one with a vertically brushed steel cover over its dial with windows for the jumping hour and trailing minutes and a Wayfinder compass logo running seconds indicator in the center — and given it an all-black makeover.

The aptly named Terra Nova 38 Jumping Hour Stealth Black features black DLC coating on its 904L stainless steel cushion case, with all markings for the jump hour rendered in stark white. This makes for one of the most legible guichet watches I’ve seen, and easily ranks as the most rugged and badass-looking.

Amping up the toolish vibes is a black leather bund strap. Normally, I am not a fan of bund straps at all. I understand their original function of protecting pilots’ wrists in case their watch heated up in a fire, but I think they generally look goofy, and anyone who wears one just looks like they’re cosplaying as a 1930s aviator.

“I like this bund strap.” – Things I never thought I’d say.

However, I think the blacked-out bund actually works here. It provides an unbroken, expansive black backdrop for the cushion case and does an excellent job of drawing the eye to the center of the dial. It also just looks, well, tough. I assume the sheer amount of black leather on display is responsible for that — most bund straps I’ve seen are brown.

If you’re not sold on the bund, no worries. You can remove the bund portion and wear it as a standard strap. Additionally, the watch is also available on a fully blacked-out DLC 904L stainless steel bracelet. The mix of brushed and polished finishes on the bracelet looks quite high-end when paired with the DLC coating, and the end result resembles black ceramic.

If you’re not bund-curious, the watch also comes on a matching black DLC bracelet.

Outside of the cool new DLC treatment — and the available bund strap — this is the same watch as the other Terra Nova 38 Jumping Hour references, with the same 38 x 9.1mm case design, the same articulating bracelet secured with a butterfly clasp, the same 30m water resistance and the same closed caseback with a globe motif in relief.

Hidden behind that closed caseback is the same movement as usual, Bremont’s exclusive Cal. BC634AH automatic. It’s a Sellita that’s custom-made for Bremont with a jump-hour module, and it runs at 4Hz with a power reserve of 56 hours.

Availability and pricing

Although this release has “limited edition” written all over it, Bremont has actually made the Stealth Black part of its permanent Terra Nova Jumping Hour collection. Something tells me it’s destined to be a bestseller.

The DLC coating does bring a bit of a premium over the plain steel version of the watch, as expected. On the bund strap, the watch retails for $5,200. If you opt for the steel bracelet, the price rises to $5,650. Both are available now from Bremont, including online.
