It has been almost a year to the day since Timex released the Automatic 1983 E Line, a compact retro sports watch powered by a respectable Miyota automatic movement.

The minimalist TV dial debuted in solid navy blue and robin’s egg blue, each with a glossy finish, along with a uniform brushed-steel motif. Now, the collection is refreshed for the coming spring with two sunburst dials in eye-catching pastel colors.

The revived E-Line, which you may have guessed dates back to 1983, received its first sunburst dial in late 2025 with a limited-edition gold-toned version featuring a green dial. The radial brushing proved to be such a nice complement to the brushed stainless steel case that Timex brought it back.

This time, the original steel case and bracelet are complete with a sunburst dial in ice blue or faded pink. The chamfered, pointed stick indices, printed dash minutes track and toothpick hands remain unchanged.

On both colors, Timex and “automatic” are printed in black at 12:00, joined by the odd choice of a “water resistant” symbol at 6:00, despite the watch offering only 50m of water resistance, making it one of the features least worthy of advertisement.

A discreet date window still sits in place of an hour marker at 3:00 with no frame. The date track is printed in black on a white disc for both dial colors.

A retro kind of sporty

The Automatic 1983 E-Line has a few things going for it that stand out from Timex’s massive catalog. Foremost is the Miyota Caliber 8215 automatic movement, which is a very respectable engine for the $250 price.

Going hand in hand with the movement is the demure 34mm case, which is not uncommon for Timex but is almost unheard of with an automatic movement. Even the sub-38mm Marlin watches are either quartz or manual.

Next up is the TV dial set into a slightly angular case, fondly reminiscent of late 1970s and early 1980s design language, which is as popular now as ever. It isn’t technically an integrated sports watch, but it mimics the silhouette with a 20mm tapered steel strap that flows seamlessly into the case.

Speaking of the bracelet, it is another charming aspect that is faithful to the original design. The Automatic 1983 E-Line comes on Timex’s Perfect Fit stainless steel expansion band.

It is comprised of two layers of flat metal links connected by flexible metal joints that allow the band to stretch out and compress comfortably to the wrist like elastic. It can be a little rough on arm hair, but it is one of the coolest relics of 1980s watch design.

However, if you’re not a fan of the Perfect Fit band, it is easily removed with quick-release spring bars. Personally, I think the TV dial would look best with a Jubilee-style five-link bracelet.

Availability and price

The Timex Automatic 1983 E-Line with a sunburst dial in Ice Blue and Light Pink is available now from Timex for $249, which is easily one of the best bargains in the entire watch market.

While the brushed steel dial and the short-lived gold-tone, green-dial reference are both sold out, the original navy blue and robin’s egg blue dials are still available.
