The Casio G-Shock GSTB400-1AWC sits in an interesting middle ground within G-Shock’s lineup — a full-metal G-Steel model that trades the line’s typical heft for a significantly slimmer profile, without sacrificing the ruggedness the brand is known for.

Finding this unique, functional, and premium G-Shock for sale at Costco for more than $120 off its retail price should be a welcome surprise for anyone looking to pick up an excellent modern digital watch on a tighter budget, granted they’ve got the wrist-size to wear it.

In his overview on aBlogtoWatch, Nick Lehner put the nail on the head by calling the GSTB400 series a “Goldilocks” G-Shock — premium enough to justify the price, practical enough to wear anywhere.

So it’s a genuine surprise to find it available right now at Costco for $230, or over $120 less than its retail price.

Thin, premium and capable

The watch’s resin-and-stainless-steel case allowed G-Shock to make this model just 12.9mm thick — making it the thinnest G-Steel model in the lineup when it launched.

Where most G-Steel models lean into a blocky, oversized aesthetic, the GSTB400 takes a different approach. It’s built around G-Shock’s carbon core guard structure, which allows the resin-and-stainless-steel case to be slimmed down to just 12.9mm thick — making it one of the thinnest G-Steel models in the lineup when it launched and over a millimeter thinner than the GSTB100 series it replaced.

That slim package doesn’t come at the cost of capability. The GSTB400 retains Tough Solar charging, 200-meter water resistance, and Bluetooth connectivity via the G-Shock Connected app — which makes adjusting settings and syncing time zones far simpler than navigating the pushers alone.

The resin strap features an interlaced pyramid texture that gives the watch a more finished feel than a standard G-Shock band, and it’s fitted with quick-release spring bars for users who’d prefer to swap the strap out for something else.

The ana-digi dial pairs white sword hands and large rectangular indices treated with Casio’s Neobrite lume with dual digital sub-displays for date, running seconds, and various timing functions.

The 49.6mm case still reads large on the wrist and won’t suit all body types, but the reduced profile makes it considerably easier to wear under a cuff.

Pricing and availability

True to G-Shock’s rugged ethos, even though this watch features advanced solar charging, the watch still offers an impressive battery life even if it’s stuck in a drawer. According to the product page, it can last approximately “7 months on rechargeable battery (operation period with normal use without exposure to light after charge) and 18 months on rechargeable battery (operation period when stored in total darkness with the power save function on after full charge).”

The GSTB400-1AWC is currently available at Costco for $229.99 — a significant discount off the watch’s $350 retail price.

If you’d rather not deal with a Costco membership, it’s also available on Amazon on sale right now for around $249, which is roughly $20 more than Costco charges.

For those who want to buy directly, the watch is also sold through the G-Shock website at full retail.
