The Classic Moc needs little introduction, even though its latest makeover might prompt a double take.

To this day, Red Wing still crafts its iconic work boot the old-fashioned way, using leather insoles, Goodyear welts and the brand’s 70-year-old No. 23 last for extra room in the forefoot.

Red Wing continues to build the Classic Moc boot around its No. 23 last from the 1950s.

But if those qualities have made it a perennial favorite among hunters, laborers and hipsters since the 1950s, a rugged update with military pedigree brings a new complexion to the storied silhouette.

The Red Wing Classic Moc “Sandstone Mohave” trades the style’s typical Oro Legacy upper for one fashioned out of tan roughout leather.

This draws the design closer to mid-century military footwear, such as desert boots, and underscores its utility as function-first footwear.

Unlike polished leather, the napped, imperfect surface of roughout embraces scuffs, creases and stains, while simultaneously speeding up Red Wing’s notoriously laborious break-in period.
