From a craft standpoint, handmade boots are in another class. Far separated from the mass-produced offerings you find at big box stores, these boots represent the kind of care you can only get from a distinctly human touch.

But they’re even better when they have a bit of history attached to that craft, as is the case with the Maharishi x Fracap 3303 Okinawa Boot.

While this iteration is new, the design of these boots dates all the way back to WWII. Specifically, these are a reproduction of jungle boots used by the U.S. military in tropical combat situations.

That means that its dual-material upper is not just for show; it has a specific function.

In damp jungles, standard boots would get extremely bogged down and couldn’t withstand constant exposure to moisture. The canvas upper of these was quick-drying and more resilient in wet situations.

The boots also have a traditional lacing system, along with a more unusual leather strap dual-fastener at the collar, similar to a bund watch strap. That element remains, keeping the wearer’s ankle secure and steady even when the terrain gets rough and slippery.

Classic meets contemporary

The boots’ blueprint comes straight out of the WWII Pacific Theater, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some noteworthy updates, upgrades and other elements.

For instance, these boots are completely handmade in Italy, utilizing 100 percent fine Italian leather and cotton canvas. They also get a natural calf lining, gunmetal eyelets, dual lace colorways (black and brown) and heavy-duty hardware.

However, the Commando outsole is as contemporary as they come, which is a very good thing. Instead of recreating the original rubber, these boots feature a Vibram outsole, making them even grippier and sturdier than the originals.

So, yes, they’re built in a way that honors their heritage and maintains fealty to the original’s styling. However, they’re also updated in some critical ways that make them even better and more formidable for modern use.
