It’s been roughly four years since Honda gave the world an Insight, its signature affordable gas-electric hybrid hatchback-turned-sedan. But now, it’s officially back. Sort of. And if you’re like us, in America, we can’t have it.

The Big Japanese H just revealed a new Insight for its domestic market. Which, depending on how you feel about it, is now an all-electric crossover SUV.

For the first time in the Insight’s history, the model is now a full-fledged electric vehicle. And, on top of that, a full-on crossover SUV.

Although it doesn’t look like a crossover SUV in the conventional sense, like a CR-V or a Pilot. Rather, it looks more like a lifted wagon, a la the Toyota Crown Signia.

That’s because the new Insight actually is a byproduct of Honda’s latest joint-venture with China’s major automaker, GAC. Originally called the e:NS2 in China, Honda chose to market it as the newest Insight in Japan.

While it seems like automakers have been teaming up with Chinese-based EV manufacturers in the latest push towards electrification, Honda’s and GAC’s partnership actually roots its origins back to 1999.

The newest Insight starts life using Honda’s latest e:N Architecture F platform. It’s the latest all-electric platform for the brand’s Asian market electric vehicles.

Co-developed in partnership with GAC and Dongfeng, the e:N Architecture F platform launched in 2024. The new JDM Honda Insight is the second model to spawn from the platform.

In essence, the new Insight is basically the automaker’s second e:N Architecture F model, the e:NS2. Except, it’s rebadged the Insight specifically for the Japan market variants.

Although an Asian market vehicle, the new Insight elevates Honda’s latest design language in more ways than one.

That means the same 68.8 kilowatt/hour ternary lithium ion battery, which powers a 201-horsepower electric motor. The result is an impressive driving range of 338 miles based on China’s EV testing criteria, CLTC.

A far fall from the original apple tree

When the Insight first hit the market, it was a quirky three-door hatchback with an optional manual (yes, despite being a gas-electric hybrid). After Honda product planners found the original model to be a bit too radical, the automaker morphed the Insight into a more palatable sedan slash five-door hatchback.

It retained the sedan-like formula up through its third generation, which ended production in 2022. When the Insight entered its third rendition, it was more akin to being a Civic sedan-based hybrid.

As Honda’s original and first-ever mass-produced gas-electric hybrid, the Insight always served the automaker’s direct answer to the Toyota Prius. Now, with the Insight becoming an EV in Japan, its transition to all-electric power marks a first.

Although the Insight has always been a pioneer of electrified hybrid powertrains, it’s still a far cry from its original formula. But because it helped make electrification in the form of hybridization more popular, it’s easy to argue that its eventual transition into being a full-fledged EV was inevitable.

To make it more appealing for American buyers, the company basically created a Civic hybrid and called it the Insight, before discontinuing the model in 2022.

Whether the new all-electric Insight will come to the States has yet to be determined. But as of the model’s current status as a JDM-only vehicle, there’s no indication if it would, despite Honda-GAC’s plan to offer its Chinese-market EVs more available in the Japanese market.
