A Venerated Outdoor Brand Puts an Ultralight Spin on Its Best Hiking Sneaker

The Trailgrip is a longtime staple of Moncler’s catalog and a fan-favorite shoe, but this featherweight version is a series highlight.

When you’re out on the trails, every ounce counts. The heavier your gear, the more likely you are to gas out sooner. So, if you can cut the weight of your kit, you can stay out longer, too.

It’s precisely this philosophy that makes Moncler’s Trailgrip LP such an enticing hiking sneaker. The original was already arguably the brand’s best, but now it’s been given the ultralight treatment, too.

Mountain to metropolis

With Moncler, style is always a significant element of its releases. That’s just how it goes with this high-end performance outfit. As such, that plays directly into this sneaker.

In fact, the brand has described the ethos of offering a lower-profile version as ideal “for both the trail and the city.” This can be seen especially in both the overall styling and the materials used in its construction.

For instance, the upper is built from a combination of Nubuck (a top-grain cattle hide leather with a velvety feel), suede (a similarly soft-to-the-touch leather) and microfiber. There’s no doubt that this creates a pretty premium overall vibe, which is precisely in line with Moncler’s typical design approach.

And while the trail-to-city styling is certainly a highlight of this shoe, it pales in comparison to its actual capabilities. Despite looking like something you might see on a runway (and let’s be honest, Moncler is no stranger to such locales), this is still a highly capable outdoor sneaker.

Utilitarian and ultralight

The upper, for all its fine materials, is more flexible and lightweight than previous editions of the Trailgrip. In fact, this is the lightest version the brand has ever produced.

All told, the sneaker weighs just 380 grams, which is well under a pound (0.838 pounds, to be exact). That puts these in the featherlight category, making for a highly fleet-footed feel.

The Vibram lugged outsole “draws inspiration from the world of scrambling, the demanding intersection of rock climbing and hiking.”

Yet, that’s not all that’s exciting. To pair with the upper, the sneaker also gets a wraparound Vibram outsole. Beneath the shoe, the lugged tread offers grip on just about any surface in any conditions (in fact, it was inspired by scrambling, the activity where hiking and climbing intersect). And above it? The material wraps up and around the sides, heel and toe, offering even more protection from the elements and terrain.

The shoe also gets a new EVA foam midsole and an Ortholite insert for added comfort and impact absorption, another element that speaks to its trail-readiness.

Style and substance? This shoe has both in abundance.
