Volvo’s Quickest Car Ever Is Getting an Unexpected Utilitarian Overhaul

The automaker’s compact EX30 is stepping up for a new challenge through the addition of a surprising variant.

The EX30 may be the smallest vehicle among Volvo’s fully electric offerings, but it’s far from modest when it comes to its raw performance.

In fact, when configured with its shocking dual-motor powertrain option, the Volvo EX30 actually holds the honor of being the quickest production car the Swedish manufacturer has ever offered. 0-60 mph comes in a mere 3.4 seconds in the case of the hottest P8 trim, so the compact EV brings some sports car-like acceleration.

It’s for this reason that Volvo’s latest assignment for the model seems so unexpected. The UK branch has announced that it’s turning the EX30 into a cargo van, of all things.

A quick fix for a quick van

Of course, it’s not a van in the same sense of the word as Ram’s recently revived Promaster City. Instead, it’s a car-derived commercial conversion that ditches the rear seats in favor of added room.

Nevertheless, there’s no denying the transformation makes for some significant advances in the EX30’s utility. To create the cargo bay, Volvo fits a flat floor with an access panel to the lower level, yielding a total 390-kilogram payload and a 1,000-liter volume.

What’s more, the EX30 benefits from a specially designed payload bulkhead that separates the cabin from the cargo area. Volvo has also modified the rear side panels and doors to increase available load volume.

The EX30 isn’t a car that you’d peg for van material, so it’s an interesting conversion.

As if that wasn’t enough, the EX30 gains extended rear door access for more convenient loading, as well as an additional work light to improve visibility within the cargo area. To further equip it for van life, Volvo even fitted the underfloor subframe with extra securing and mounting points to support a range of use cases.

Luxury and options aplenty

Much as it may seem like an odd choice for a van conversion (compared to something like the larger EX90, at least), Volvo’s EX30 does make for a unique offering because of its options. Even in commercial form, it offers potential owners plenty of choice.

As such, in addition to a base 150-horsepower P3 powertrain option, Volvo’s EX30 Cargo is also available in 275-horsepower P5 and 428-horsepower P8 all-wheel drive forms. Extended range options for the P3 and P5 enable a max driving range of 300 miles.

It’s especially worth noting that the Cargo treatment isn’t exclusive to the standard EX30, as Volvo is also making it available on the Cross Country version. Beyond a slight increase in ground clearance, it brings the usual protective cladding and redesigned bumpers.

Rounded out by refinements like Pilot Assist, Digital Key Plus, a Harmon Kardon stereo system and heated interior elements available through an optional Plus trim, the result is a compact luxurious take on the commercial cargo hauler.

Availability and pricing

As Volvo is confirmed to have pulled the EX30 from the United States for 2027, don’t get your hopes out for a Cargo version coming to the American market any time soon.

It’s currently on sale in the UK, priced from £36,010 for the P5 standard range. The conversion can be applied to both newly ordered vehicles and existing stock, making it available across 2026 and 2027 models.
